When the new prez took over at ULM, he made comments about "tough decisions" that need to be made. I don't remember if he referenced athletics specifically, but everyone understood that some of his comments were directed toward sprots teams. And, the current round of budget cuts ain't helping anybody.

The fact that they are looking for an IMMEDIATE increase is evidence that they need the money NOW. And, if they don't get the money now, then they might start chopping programs. This is just my opinion, but these guys understand politics and they know how to count votes, so I don't think they are stupid enough to throw this out there unless they have to do it this way. Since the vote failed, the people in charge now have the ability to cut programs and say, "Well, we gave you the chance to save it and YOU voted it down."

I think this is a sign of dire straits in Monroe. The Since they didn't get the immediate cash infusion they were looking for, I think we will see them vote again soon and this time they will tell everyone what the consequences really are. If it fails that time, I would look for programs to be cut. I know if sounds harsh, but I think that's what it has come to.
Nick Bruno projects budget cuts at ULM at $600,000 to $7 million depending on what happens during the regular session that starts this coming Monday.

ULM's athletic program will have to find a extremely generous donor very fast or they will have to dramatically cut back on a shoestring operating budget. The athletic department sources of funding are either drying up or non-existant. The students just voted down the athletic fee increase. Bruno will have to slash the ULM's operating budget including the $3.6 million in direct institutional support the university provides for the athletic program during the 2010 Fiscal Year. With the recent deals announced with Grambling, Baylor, and Tulane, ULM will not have as many guarantee games on their football schedule in 2012 and 2013 as they have in the past.

When 60% of the AD's budget ($10.75 million in 2010) comes from guarantee games ($2.94 million) and direct support from ULM ($3.58 million), any hit to either category will be devastating to the athletic program.

Sigh the lawmakers said they will oppose any suggestion of merger...

When are we going to get it in our head that it is time to do things differently...

Talks of a video board for football started as far back as four years ago with the ULM facilities corporation. Bruno gave the project the green light this past February, but the private dollars must still be gathered by the athletic department or the money will have to come from elsewhere.

"They knew the message when we began the projects is that I'm prepared to move forward with this, but you've got to raise the money — now the only difference was I didn't wait for them to raise the money to do it so we took a little bit of a risk, but it's also their risk because they know some of the money they're raising now that they're using for other purposes if they don't raise additional money, it's going to have to pay for the boards so that's a pretty good incentive," Bruno said. "There's a budget there that Mr. Staub is going to have to determine if he doesn't raise the money, he knows he's got to bring it out of his other fundraising so he's going to be short somewhere.""

Video board is going to kill their program.

So taxing their students didn't work, what will they do?

"The current student base does not seem as energetic as this point about assisting the athletic department — or other departments for that matter. The ULM student body voted down a referendum about two weeks ago that would have added three new student fees to help boost the budget for athletics, visual and performing arts and campus beautification. The proposal was shot down by a narrow 6 percent margin, but it does not seem to discourage those on the administration side of things. In fact, the optimism about the direction the program is headed is evident to where university officials believe in a couple of years that the proposal could be tweaked and placed back on the table and possibly passed."

So they spent money they didn't have and expected a bailout.

    Sounds familiar.

Not just current student's, they've been pissing off their alumni for the past 20 years pretty consistently, first NLU to ULM, then Indians to Warhawks. Keep on shootin' NLULM pretty soon you'll blow both your feet completely off!
