Still, this is absolutely phenominal! Hopefully, in the very near future, we will see such efforts attempted in regards to fuels other than gasoline. If this country could achieve energy independence once again, we would see a boom as we did in the 50's and in ten years, those who would destroy us despite our efforts to protect their lone energy asset, would be asking for handouts.

I'm sitting on a drilling rig in West Texas, using this new-fangled horizontal drilling, getting more crude out of the ground.

The 646.7mpg is an American record (North and South America). Guiss - the car this year is completely new. The new red roadster is a composite unibody. There is not a frame. The whole car only weighed 195 lbs. This plays a large part into the performance. Also, this year was the first year that the team ran with fuel-injection. The car runs on a 50cc Honda. There is not fuel-injection on this type of engine, so the team had to build their own.

In the group picture, who are the people in purple shirts that are in front? Why isn't our team in the front?

Cool. I remember that you mentioned the possibility of moving to fuel injection and using carbon fiber for weight reduction. Did you use some off-the-shelf low-cc fuel injectors and fuel pump or are these parts entirely custom? What did you use to control the fuel injection?

BTW, it seems like the team really set the bar high this year. Any ideas how to boost efficiency even more next year? Weight and fuel control were probably the lowest hanging fruit. I am sure you can continue to tweak at those two variables going forward, but it is hard to imagine what else you could do to significantly improve efficiency. Perhaps you can do something with the exhaust to add energy to the drive train? Maybe use the hot side of a small turbo and remove the compressor and replace with a gear and chain to drive another gear on your axle. Has anything like that been considered?

At 646.7 mpg, you could theoretically drive that red roadster from Ruston to Houston and back to Ruston on less than 1 gallon of gas...

How fast can those cars go?

On second thought, the RPMs would be way off requiring a gear system (with its added weight). Plus, you would probably have very little torque to work with from the turbine shaft. Also, if you didn't get the gearing just right your engine efficiency would probably go to crap with the restriction of the exhaust.

That picture is from the opening ceremony. The team is purple is from Sullivan High School in Indiana. Several high schools competed as well. St. Paul's from Covington won an award, and Benton High School had a team, too.

I have no idea what top speeds are, but during the race they are required to average 15mph (IIRC), and the use a "burn and coast" method. That would be one long drive.
