What's the best & cheapest internet based phone service, preferably one that allows me to keep my home phone number.

    Thanks

Superantispyware (yes, I know it sounds like one of THOSE programs, but it is perfectly safe) is a good anti-spyware program that is free.

AVAST is a very good anti-virus program that was free, but I think now you can only get a 30-day trial for free. Microsoft Security Essentials is free, and is pretty good.

    There is a free version.

Honestly, Microsoft would be the last company I would trust as far as security is concerned. Just don't do it. There are way too many other good programs out there.

    And a reminder:

You can have as many anti-malware programs installed, at one time, as you want. It is highly recommended that you only have ONE Antivirus program installed at a time.

I know that is recommended, but what is the reason? We are required to have McAfee firewall at our office, but I run AVAST, too, because it seems to do a better job. It has not seemed to cause problems. AVAST does sometimes cause everything to run slow while it updates virus definitions.

A firewall is not the same thing as an antivirus scanner. Are you sure that's the only McAfee component you are running is the firewall? If not, I would remove Avast.

That is a great article explaining why it is bad.

Basically, an antivirus program is like a vaccination. It uses a live virus to catch and eliminate other viruses. If you have more than one program, they attack each other, so-to-speak. And having 2 AV programs running in the background, at the same time, could cause a major slowdown of your machine.

Our McAfee SonicWall lists real-time protection against viruses and spyware. I have unistalled Avast. Thanks for the advice.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I've got so many things going right now that I didn't want to spend the time doing research so I'll use your recommendations. I'm tired of paying Norton.

It's not a bad piece of software. It's just too much for my tastes.

I use ESET NOD32, it's quick and doesn't bog your system down.

You don't get anything "through" google.

All Google is is an indexer. You tell it what to search for, it finds webpages that fit your search criteria. Google can't "do" anything to your machine. Apparently you must have clicked on a random link that then downloaded the virus to your machine.

Not true. It came through google pics. Both the Apple help and community and Geek Squad confirmed. It's a new one hitting the MAC world fairly hard just this week.

I may have been incorrect in saying that you can't get it "through" Google, but you must have clicked on an infected image. Therefore Google didn't "do" anything.

Why are you using a Mac? Yuck!

First I'd heard of it. Mac has always been considered to be safe from most of these things, I guess because the percentage of Mac users is so small that most of these demented people want to aim their "talents" at the larger group. Here is a story on this new virus, which isn't really a virus:

That is precisely the reason why. When 90%+ of all computers in the world are windows, which would YOU spend your time creating viruses for?
