I think you caused some confusion by suggesting that Louisiana's entire educational system is ranked 47th, when the list you cited has Louisiana ranked 47th in K-12 only.

I fail to see how the number of state 4-year universities negatively or positively effects performance in the K-12 category.

Not sure either, was wondering why DAWG06 seemed to think two many 4 year colleges affected ACT scores, but he confuses me with a lot of the things his says. Most of the people I know that graduated from high school in Louisiana already knew where the state ranked and don't try to defend it. Actually, Louisiana has improved the used to be in the bottom two when I was at Tech. I always wondered if Katrina had an affect on the Louisiana educational system

It doesnt affect the how K-12 does, but it might affect the types of students some of these universities at the bottom of the heap will take. Say your state should only really need 4 or 5 decent sized universities to get those with decent HS credentials to have local colleges to go to (suppy-demand met). Once you add another 5 or 6, they will have to have open admissions and pretty much take anyone. This all stems from everyone needs to go to college mantra that pervades our society, and it was especially bad in LA because we wanted more people to have college degrees (we redefined "college material" to anyone who could breathe and get out of high school). Nevermind the fact that many of the college degrees we offer would be better used as toilet paper or that some of our colleges are terrible.

Lots of words up there , but I still am surprised to see that we scored so much worse than schools such as lsu-s, mcneese, nicholls state, ul(barf)m, lsu-a, slu, lsu, and nsu.

Doesn't the chart indicate that all of those schools are enrolling a higher proportion of qualified applicants (under a higher common standard) than we ??

    I'd never have imagined that.

    Re: Admission Standards

The new standards will require freshmen at SUNO to either score 20 on the ACT college admissions test or have a minimum 2.0 grade-point average in 19 "core" high school courses. Incoming students at UNO would need a 2.5 high school g.p.a. or a 23 on their ACTs.

This paragraph confuses me. Does this imply that different schools will be required to have different standards? If so, I cant interpret anything from the data because they are moving targets. No way does a school with open enrollment, such as NSU, have more qualified students on any standard.

So, you are saying that different schools will still have different admission standards in 2012, and some will have to step up their recruitment more than others if they want to maintain their enrollment levels ?? That makes more sense.

Northwestern has the same admission standards as McNeese, Southeastern, Nicholls and most of the other regional state universities. The standards beginning this fall are a 2.35 gpa or an ACT score of 21, top 50 percent of your high school graduating class and must have completed the Regents' core curriculum.
