"Black-box" to be installed in all new cars starting in June 2011

    http://www.examiner.com/finance-exam...-box-installed

Beginning in June of 2011, all new cars manufactured and sold in the United States will be required to have a mandated black box device installed, which can be used to monitor several different physical and technical data points....

I would be fine with it, if all it was capable of recording were things like speeds, braking methods, g-forces...

The thing I am most concerned about it is if there are any location features (gps) and the whole "mileage tax".

I'll be DAMNED if I get taxed per mile I drive to bail this country out of debt. I'll walk.

I know these "black box" or EDR (event data recorders) are already installed in many vehicles today. How do they work? Do they just keep temporary data on the last session you were driving? I wonder what is the data storage capacity.

I highly doubt it. This guy just wrote a blog and put in very extreme scenarios.

This should be easy enough to "fix". Someone will have a hack on it before it is even installed. If it uses GPS, a simple battery operated noise jammer would be an easy way to block the signal.

Many of us have had these in our cars for years. Here are a couple more articles that shed some light on the issue with a little less hysteria:
    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/05/24/n...ars-next-month

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/43194805

I think that it's a matter of time before our driving habits are monitored for insurance purposes (not constantly, but periodically). This is bad for auto enthusiasts (like me) who tend to have a lead foot...

ie programs like this will not be optional: http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/con...count-05182011

On the top page of the comments section for the story on "autoblog" Barry looks like he'd fit right in on BB&B.

IF you walk, then you will be saving the environment. Libs win either way brother.

Louisiana and indeed all states have laws against tampering with exhaust systems, such as the pipes. Yet, about 1/3 of all vehicles on the road have illegal devices and/or have required devices removed. Law enforcement knows it. Had one police officer laugh and say, Heck, my pick-em-up truck is illegal, so I am not gonna ticket someone else for it.

Some of us don't think the car comes perfect from the factory. Anything that the government makes the factory install on the car, we can easily take off, bypass, modify, or piggyback. The simple solution to this device is to install an intermediate piece of software that sends false data to the device.

“It’s a great experience seeing them play. It was a good atmosphere. The fans stood up the whole game and never sat down. They have a great fan base.”

Someone will have a new business of rendering these boxes useless very quickly.
