The Demon of Unrest- by Erik Larson (all his books are great, but this one would fall somewhere in the middle of his works)

    and

The Secret of Secrets- by Dan Brown (good but in the middle somewhere again)

Has anyone read Tolkien's The Silmarillion? I started it many years ago, but alas, I have not finished it. Have read Tolkien's two short stories book: "Smith of Wootton Major," and "Farmer Giles of Ham." Have read The Hobbit twice.

Have also read The Earth Sea Trilogy by Ursula LeGuin. Pretty good too.

By the way, among other things I toil at, I fancy myself a writer. Have completed a book about a dragon, a fantasy adventure, and started on my own trilogy, having completed volume 1, and am experiencing writer's block in Chapter 3 of volume 2.

If anyone is interested, I would welcome some critical opinions and can email copies, by chapter. Private message me with your email if you're interested. Thanks.

I've read the Silmarillion. I think there is discussion further back in this thread somewhere from when I was reading it. Some of it is tough sledding and a lot of it is so good you'll be furious there isn't more. It will add a lot of context to the LOTR (just the Beren and Luthien part alone would do that as often as it's referenced and repeated in LOTR, but also Earendil is helpful to know about). Beren and Luthien probably the best bit and certainly the most personal to Tolkien.

You might find this helpful (or at least interesting) if you really want to nerd out on the whole thing.

I tried to get the middle kid to read The Wizard of Earthsea recently. I think he'd like it if he'd give it a chance, but he had too much else ahead in his to-be-read queue I guess. Operation Hail Mary was an easier sell considering how much he loved The Martian (and especially when he saw the trailer, although it honestly probably didn't need that - I probably should have just handed it to him after he finished The Martian).
