I just finished a book about some conqistadors. First Europeans to travel the length of the Amazon. It was a rough trip, but I had a hard time feeling sorry for them since the whole point was that they were trying to conquer and enslave the native peoples along the way. Still an interesting story.

Picked this up at a discount store, Dark and Bloody Ground: The Battle of Mansfield and the Forgotten Civil War in Louisiana Real interesting story of a forgotten region in the War. A couple of breaks for the South in the state might have helped change the final outcome. The book is really about General Dick Taylor and the early part of the book takes place in the Eastern Theater. But it is a very good account of the war in the Bayou State. I did not know much about Taylor before I read this, but he was a brillant general and truly "did more with less" throughout the War.

If you haven't visited the museum and battleground there, please do. I was impressed with the amount of artifacts and with the stories about the battle.

Currently re-reading Guns of the South. Excellent alternative history if you enjoy that type of reading.

    Updated for Gonzo....

    Teaser from back cover:

January 1864 - General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower.

Then Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demostrates an amazing rifle: its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency is breathtaking - and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quanties to the Confederates.

The name of the weapon is the AK-47...

Hint: The 47s make a slight difference in a battle or two.... :icon_wink:

This is a great thread. One improvement I would like is for people to give a brief description of the book.

The Shreveport camp of the SCV is the Richard Taylor camp. My Dad use to take me to the reenactment of the Battle of Mansfield almost every year. The battle grounds has been fighting for it's existence lately. I've been to the Battle of Pleasant Hill reenactment as well which is interesting due to it's two parts. The first battle the yankees win and march on to Mansfield. The second battle the Rebs catch them in retreat and continue the whipping. That was a gritty time with some really rugged individuals on both sides.

Unfortunately, a lot of battlefields face that situation these days.

Just finished Kill Shot by Vince Flynn (his latest book). Vince has series out on covert black ops performed by a CIA Assasin with the assistance of of various military and federal agencies such as FBI, Seal Team 6, Delta Squad, and other foreign intelligence agencies. They target extreme terrerorist organisations and save America from the brink of disaster by preventing numerous attacks on our country. Very intense action packed stories. The main Character Mitch Rapp is a total bad ass and a man i would not cross in real life. I recommend any thing written by Vince Flynn!

Sounds like a good 24 plot.
