Poem for Partakers of Brews & Distilled Spirits

I first saw the following poem years ago over the bar of a man who was one of my key mentors. He was the best negotiator, businessman, CPA, and banker I have ever known. And he enjoyed his scotch. In moderation of course. Recently I came across it and have installed it in a place of honor at my home.

Given a couple of the threads here, I thought some of you might enjoy it.

The name has been lost and the author is unknown. But I call it:

    Man’s Dominion Explained

The horse and mule live 30 years
And never know of wines or beers

The goat and sheep at 20 die
Without a taste of scotch or rye.

The cow drinks water by the ton
And at 18 is mostly done.

The dog at 15 cashes in
Without the aid of rum or gin.

    The modest, sober, bone-dry hen
Lays eggs for nogs and dies at 10.

    All animals are strictly dry.
They sinless live and swiftly die.

    But sinful, ginful, rum-soaked men
Survive for three-score years and 10.

And some of us, a mighty few
    Stay pickled 'til we're 92.

Gotta get that on a plaque to hang over the bar.
