Can someone explain to me how the debt and deficit are different and then how they are so vastly different numbers?

Deficit is when you run a loss over the year. Debt is the amount borrowed to cover the accumulation of these deficits/surpluses over time. So, if the deficit was 1 Trillion this year and the debt was 14 Trill to start the year, the debt is now 15 trillion (assuming that you have to borrow to cover that loss).
