Between now and the legislative session next year I believe his focus is on "if" we do it. "If" is worked out, it will happen rather quickly or it won't happen at all. Isn't about time for Lombardi to move to some other school. I think he has served at Florida and in Mass. Ohio St. could use some help........

My information agrees with the above. DR appears to be consistent about protecting the best interests of Tech from everything I have heard. If done on a sound basis, there are some strong upsides to merging LSUS into LA TECH. It appears that he wants to retire on a high note, and if we are moved into the LSU funding system, we can expect him to do everything he can to preserve the LA TECH identity.

We need more than protection to preserve our identity. We need assurances that we will be able to grow TECH in the directions it needs and not have programs we have incubated taken away. We could be all TECH with nothing behind it if only our identity was preserved. The orginal reply by DR covered only the superficial aspects of name etc. Much more has to be protected for TECH to be where we should in the future.

The Med School thing is about administration & who does more with less than LA Tech?

Just as you say not to trust LSU, you must remember that Shreveport is an LSU first city (even though LSU has not done much to enhance its operations in Shreveport). Many of the movers & shakers here do not trust LA Tech. This group of "Shreveport Business leaders" is getting involved with their own money to figure out for themselves what a merger would mean for the city. Most reasonable people agree that there are too many public 4 year U's in this state. But this group wants to know do we keep LSUS open, do we fire their employees, do we work with them and grow their campus & ours. It's a selfish study, but one that is necessary for them to be able to approach legislators & boards with an opinion. We need to market our a_s off even if the LSU side wont participate. This is our greatest opportunity into this market & to become a 25 to 30,000 student body in the near future.

    Good find.

The third to last paragraph is very interesting.

It looks like DR's biomed, nano, and cyber engineering programs may lead to the greatest coup in higher ed history.

Does anyone have a qualified "opinion" on how we can learn from UNO's experience as a part of the LSU system? Did it work for them? Why not?

We need to make sure responsibility for the physical plant is shared as well. LSUS's facilities make BPCC look like MIT. Gonna need to be a Tom of money poured in to renovations in the next 15-20 years.

The UNO- SUNO merger turned into a racial thing. Many accusations were made about essentially closing down SUNO.

True. But the medical schools in Shreveport and New Orleans are administered by the lsu system, not the lsu university campus in Baton Rouge. And I don't see that changing.

The motivation of the Shreveport-Bossier business leaders for wanting to merge LSUHSCS and LSUS into LA Tech is to boost their local economy. Shreveport's Biomedical Research Foundation has been a bust, and the Shreveport-Bossier business leaders think that Tech's biomedical and nano engineering departments could ignite that floundering research park and boost the local economy. In addition, Tech's new program in cyber engineering would be able to partner better with Bossier's new Cyber Innovation Center, which desperately needs help since the US politicians moved Cyber Command away from Barksdale AFB. They also know that they only way Shreveport-Bossier will ever be able to offer advanced degrees in disciplines that can actually boost the local economy like engineering is to merge LSUS into LA Tech. I think if Shreveport-Bossier, LA Tech, and LSU-BR want this done, there is nothing Lombardi or anybody else can do to stop them.

We avoid funding reductions that UL system is going to take.
