    Elections

I will be happy when the elections are over. I forgot exactly how much I hate campaigns. The only thing worse than nationional is local. I got a card from Jason Bullock today saying he was the only candidate involved with Louisiana Tech. Really?

Shadoin was also a business law professor at Tech as I was finishing up my EE degree in 2004-2005. I took his Business Law 255(?) class as part of a Business Administration minor. He was a cool and interesting teacher who didn't care about taking attendance for his 8:00 AM class. He reminded me of Bill Engvall if he was a lawyer.

It doesn't matter anyway. All of them go down there a decide what more the government is going to tell us we can't do.

In another BESE race, Jindal has hand-picked Holly Boffy against Dale Bayard. I say 'hand-picked', but word is a big chunk portion of her 'war chest' (~$40K v ~$4K for the incumbent for an unpaid job...) is from Jindal. And the State Republican party is paying for her advertising.

That's bizarre to me; the Guillot/Guice race too. Absolutely bizarre.

I should pay more attention to state politics as it relates to local school boards and BESE districts. I know that Jindal is supposedly big on "rewarding excellence" and according to his camp something less than excellence continues to be rewarded (Hello Monroe City School System). I also have been told over the years that rural school systems don't have a real chance at improvement and I can understand why since I grew up in a rural area with way too many public schools and not enough potential revenue from a local source to support them.

We have at least one school board member from a local parish who might weigh in.

So Jindal is on his way to getting his man in position. Let's hear the positives and negatives First question...

Where do the teacher's unions stand?

Based on the BESE elections last Saturday, Jindal will get 7 people he endorsed/appointed to the board with an eighth member (C. Roemer) likely to be elected in a runoff next month. The Louisiana Federation of Teachers' endorsed candidates were routed in the polls.

From the Times-Picayune on May 11, 2011: "The move [White becoming Education Superintendent] also would likely anger the state's teacher unions, which were pushing for a more veteran educator to take the reins."

"Steve Monaghan, the longtime president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, said it would be premature to make a judgment on White, pointing out that he has not had a chance to meet White or speak with him."

"But Monaghan said BESE and Gov. Bobby Jindal should strongly consider a candidate with a longer track record as a teacher."

"'One of the difficulties that Pastorek had is that within the education community, within the classroom, there was a feeling that the superintendent had no shared experience with the educator,' he said."
