UA hires John L. Smith as interim HC. Smith is another class act, just spent 4 1/2 months at Weber State and then jumped ship leaving them to find another coach now. His previous stops included Louisville (where he informed players at halftime of their bowl game that he was leaving for MSU) and Michigan State where he was fired.

This could be fun to watch...

Didn't Long say that it'd be dirty to hire someone else's coach right now? Guess Weber St. fans have a new team to hate on.

I am not sure I understand this, why not take an inside coach and wait until time is right to hire perm?

To UA, he is "inside" since he's been a sportscaster for the last 2 years there.

Then again, they could stupidly be thinking a mediocre ex-Michigan St. coach has done pretty well at LSU and Alabama, maybe another one can have some magic at UA.

John L. Smith was successful at Louisville and was Big 10 Coach of the Year at Michigan State before collapsing there, He is a good hire for this sitatuation: he knows the staff, knows the system, knows how to be a successful head coach.

Slap the interim tag on someone else on the staff and you do them a disservice.

Weber State is his alma mater. Sucks he left as he did,

I agree with you. Of course, this only works for Arkansas right now because of the unique situation they are in. But in this situation, I think hiring John L Smith is very solid move for Arkansas. He's very popular there, and just left this past winter for Weber.

I never understood why he won coach of the year. Yeah, turning a team from 4-8 to 8-5 is pretty good, but it's not like he won a championship or did anything outstanding.

I do not believe for one second he'll be successful at UA no matter how talented they are. He can't coach up. He did good at Idaho, and as he has progressed through the ranks so to say and the competition has gotten harder, he's got worse and worse with only a couple years of magic. Nothing in his history shows that he would know what to do or how to coach in the SEC. For all intents and purposes, unless the talent takes over, UA is going to be slaughtered if he stays coach.

I think you are correct JuBru, if he comes as a figurehead and does not try to impose any changes he UA will be ok. They do have great talent this year. If he will just let the Coaches that are in place do the coaching they should be ok. I also agree that I do not believe he is that great of a coach, at least he has not proved this.

He has won 60% of his games. Good not great.
