The academics come into play because it is the presidents doing the voting and not the AD's or the comptrollers.

Doesn't matter, money IS what is driving it. You can stretch this thread out to 25 pages and hash it out a hundred times and the final conclusion will still be money.

Re: Conference re-alignment has jumped the shark

    Big 12 spin:

    John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby is apparently diving right into the deep end of the conference expansion pool. I was told that “back channel” contact is currently taking place with five high major schools, with regards to joining the Big 12 conference. These lines of communication have been opened with Clemson, Maryland, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame.

It is anticipated that two of those five will join before summer’s end, two of those five will be invited to join the Big 12. (There is also an outside chance that a combination of Brigham Young for football, with Notre Dame in all other sports could be combined with one of the other four schools. But it’s definitely an outside chance.) Initial contact has been made with all of the schools, and none of the five have closed the door on the possibility. Georgia Tech is a bit lukewarm, based upon the relative academic reputations of the ACC and the Big 12.

Notre Dame is reportedly talking to the ACC as well, but has qualms about going that route, given the revenue disparity between the ACC’s new ESPN deal and the one the Big 12 agreed to with ESPN/Fox. The Big 12′s deal offers $20 million annually per team, with escalators that could raise that figure to as much as $23-25 million, should the Big 12 find attractive expansion candidates. Meanwhile, the ACC’s deal is not only for less annual money, at “only” $17 million per team, but includes all three tiers of television rights, meaning that a school like Notre Dame would be deprived of a potentially lucrative revenue stream that their third-tier rights would provide.

The other schools?Atlantic Coast Conference members all?have expressed unqualified interest in continuing the discussion of switching conferences. Asked to rank the expansion candidates, the person I talked to placed them in the following order, based on a combination of the school’s interest in joining the conference, and the conference’s interest in having them:

    1) Clemson
    2) Florida State
    3) Maryland
    4) Notre Dame*
    5) Georgia Tech
[Ed.: Fixed a mixup of FSU and Maryland. Maryland was listed 3rd.]

*=Reportedly, if the Big 12 was to warm up to a ND/BYU combination, that would jump up the list considerably. At this point, however, Big 12 officials are more interested in using the leverage of the new 4-team playoff to force Notre Dame out of their comfort zone of football independence.

It would appear that we are now headed into another summer of realignment. But with an aggressive new commissioner in the driver’s seat, the Big 12 appears ready to be driving the bus this time, instead of just desperately trying to get out of the way.

Sorry. I just can't see any of those ACC teams leaving the ACC for the Big XII. They are just too far out of the Big XII geography. And unlike W. VA's move from the Big East, these teams would have to leave a REAL conference.

If they cut the right deal for the Irish, I COULD see Notre Dame doing this.

And if the Irish would come then I could see BYU following. That said, I could still see UT pulling up stakes and going Indy at some point! Then I would hope we would be ready for round two and a shot at a revised SWC type setup.

.......Or some type of arrangement where Texas and Notre Dame would be "independent" in football (with their own TV networks), but play in the Big XII for all Olympic sports.

Like I said....they will have to cut the right deal for the Irish.....

Re: Conference re-alignment has jumped the shark

Any conference that ND joins will tear up the existing TV contract and write a new one. Figure ACC is more likely for them than the Big 12. If they do join the ACC, along with Rutgers or UConn, it might keep the others from jumping. So we might see something very soon if ND does decide to join as I am guessing the ACC will want this done much sooner, rather than later.

I don't see ND doing anything but staying pat as they are. Why would anyone in the Big 12 want Texas and ND to be calling all the shots? They already have Bevo as their Diva and don't need another. Besides, why would Texas vote in a school that will make more demands than they already do?

Stop me if this is incorrect, but ...

Isnt the Big12 the only conference that allows its members to negotiate their own secondary tv deals on the side?

From that perspective, the Bevo12 would seem like a natural fit for ND & BYU. (If they ever want to be in a conference, that is.)

Re: Conference re-alignment has jumped the shark

    The big 12 was desperate.
They felt like they HAD to land somebody with some name recognition....anybody...even if it didn't make sense or add market (which neither team did).

they had lost Nebraska, Colorado, Texas A&M, and Mizzou. Three of those teams have sizeable TV markets and carried significant names.
then the big12 FAILED miserably in their attempt to woo Notre Dame. Then they failed miserably in attempting to add BYU. Then they even crashed and burned with Air Force.
    That's when desperation set in.
They reached on WVU, which carries little or no TV market of its own.
And they added TCU which, while they are a nice competitive program, they add zero value in terms of TV sets. The horns and sooners already controlled the Dallas market.

Notre Dame and BYU have both flat out declined overtures of the Big12.

    How timely is this?

Carlton: 10 Big 12 schools will receive $20 million a year in 13-year deal

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/

CHUCK CARLTON The Dallas Morning News Staff Writer
    ccarlton@dallasnews.com
    Published: 12 May 2012 12:49 AM

The pending 13-year television rights extension with ESPN will bring much-needed stability to the Big 12 as well as an infusion of cash.

The 10 schools in the Big 12 have agreed to grant their TV rights to the conference for the life of the contract, contingent on it being signed. The Big 12 also has a 13-year TV deal with Fox that begins this year. Combined the two will be worth about $2.6 billion or roughly $20 million per school per year.

Texas Tech president Guy Bailey publicly acknowledged the agreement during an interview Friday on Tech Talk on KTTU-FM (104.3) in Lubbock.

“It will also cement the future of the league,” Bailey said. “We’ll have to sign a 13-year commitment of rights. When you do that, you’re not going anywhere.”

A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed Bailey’s comments were accurate. The granting of rights had been rumored ever since details of the ESPN deal emerged in March.

The Big 12 had been under siege with the loss of Texas A&M, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado since 2010. TCU and West Virginia will join July 10.

Of course, the ESPN deal must be completed first. Lawyers are continuing to pour over the details of the extension. In a phone interview, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds noted that discussions were continuing in a positive direction.
“Texas is in favor of stability. That would give stability to the conference,” Dodds said.

The granting of rights wasn’t the only Big 12 news to emerge Friday.

    Among the other tidbits:

Expansion. Dodds dismissed reports that Florida State and Clemson might be expansion candidates for the Big 12, based on dissatisfaction with the new ACC television contract.

“I don’t think there’s been any contact with Florida State and Clemson either way,” said Dodds, adding that Big 12 continues to debate expansion or staying at 10. “The Florida State-Clemson thing has no basis at all.”

Florida State athletic director Randy disputed growing reports that sprang from message boards and websites.
“We’re in the ACC. We’re committed to the ACC,” Spetman told the Orlando Sentinel.

The Longhorn Network. Dodds said the joint venture with ESPN would probably televise two football games and as many as three this season in an effort to gain more cable carriers.

The most likely breakdown would be two non-conference games and one Big 12 game, he said. If the LHN televises more than one football game, it will need the approval of the opponent and the Big 12 office.

“The product is terrific. Distribution is the issue,” Dodds said. “If I made a mistake in this whole thing, we didn’t get out to the public that the normal process is a year to two years for distribution.”

ESPN officials visited Austin this week, and Dodds said he was confident of greater cable distribution.
“It’s a matter of when, not if,” Dodds said.

Playoffs. Long a football playoff advocate, Dodds said he liked the four-team playoff format that has emerged from the BCS commissioners.

He said he would prefer using computers and a committee to select the teams but wasn’t excited by the idea of conference champions only.
“The top four teams in the country should be in the playoff,” Dodds said. “If the top four came from the same conference, so be it.”
