Matt was offered a scholarship by Coach Dooley the summer before his Senior High School season.
It's even better. He got the call at 6:10 - 50 minutes before kickoff. I heard about this story and caught Dooley's highlight show this week. They interviewed special teams coach Eric Russell. They were honestly worried that, after watching football all day in the frat house, what type of shape he would be in.
Our MTSU friends can't be too happy about the comments from the article below. It doesn't say much for MTSU:
Fortunately for the Vols, though, Saturday’s MTSU game was one of the least-hype home games in years. Many fans — even the most diehard fans — arrived just before kickoff or didn’t arrive at all, so Brodus chose to stay on the couch rather than drive to campus for pregame “burgers.”
Sullivan said he couldn’t convince his other buddies — even Brodus, a member of the team — to attend even the first half of the UT-MTSU game.
The friends agreed to meet up at Buffalo Wild Wings on Cumberland Avenue after the first half so they could watch the UT-MTSU and Alabama-LSU games at the same time.
“I mean, we’re 100 percent Vols, through and through,” Sullivan said. “But Bama-LSU ... I mean ... that’s basically the national championship, you know? You gotta watch that.”

That's unfreaking believeable. So, even the UT students and 3rd string players didn't even want to attend the UT-MTSU game. I can't say I blame them.
This story PROVES that MTSU is a laughing stock.....even in their own state.

One of the comments below the story:
He's not the first black kicker, did you forget about LSU's Jordan Jefferson.
Cade Foster played at Southlake Carroll and I believed he helped win a 5A state championship. I believed he was the starting FG kicker as a freshman. He was also a pretty good linebacker. You have to give him some slack those were 50 yard attempts. He was highly rated out of HS.
Cool story! Read it earlier on Yahoo.
cool story.
hijack attempt: i saw a whole rack of derek dooley orange dockers at dillards the other day.

Dooley had already ruined his other kickers trying to teach them how to kick. Special teams cost us at least 3 wins in 2009. Remember how he had Matt Nelson kicking those high kicks that landed around the 20 and they usually got it out to the 40. I don't miss Dooley the coach at all.
What fraternity is this boy in?
“Towie Barclay of the Glen, Happy to the maids, But never to the men.”
Dooley looks like he is wearing his pj's at the game... hate those orange pants!!
Gotta be one of my favorite Dooley quotes at Tech, "Kickers aren't football players, they're kickers."
