Doing away with auto-bids does make sense. I don't actually expect it to have much of an impact on the Big East - at least as far as the Big 12 is concerned. Boise, SDSU, and Navy could bolt, but I doubt it and it wouldn't affect the Big 12 if they did. There isn't a member of the Big East that wouldn't accept an invite to the Big 12, so they don't need to worry about the window closing on Louisville, Cincy, or Rutgers. It would probably detrimentally affect the Big East's TV upcoming contract, but not so much that UCF, SMU, or UH would reconsider. There'd still be a core of teams and a few other schools that would accept an invite if it were offered. And none of this would affect the Big 12.

I am really skeptical that they would go with a Top 10 format. More likely, they would kick the invites back to the individual bowls. The champion alignments would stay the same, with the possible exception of the Big 12 going to the Cotton instead of the Fiesta Bowl. Most years, it would look like this:

    Rose: B1G #1 vs Pac-12 #1
    Fiesta/Cotton: Big 12 #1 vs (Pac-12 #2 or SEC #2)
    Sugar: SEC #1 vs (B1G #2 or Big 12 #2)
    Orange: ACC #1 vs (SEC #2 or SEC #3 or B1G #2)

An undefeated Non-AQ team and the Big East champ, barring something extraordinary, would be left out of the party. Add in the 5th Bowl (I'm partially assuming a 4+1) and maybe an invite would come to the right Big East or Non-AQ team.

In other words, I think this would be a further stacking of the deck against anyone who isn't in the BCS (excluding the Big East). The individual bowls would prefer SEC #3 to BE #1 or NAQ #1 most years. And because it's informal, it's harder for the BE or Non-AQ conferences to sue.
