I agree. I don't know how much they take in, but I can see it putting a major hurt on the athletic department as well. It might be close to receiving the NCAA death penalty.

Yes but this reflects on the institution as a whole and Penn St should forfiet this game if not the rest of the season. The NCAA should allow these players to transfer without losing any eligbility. There's been some discussion on what the NCAA should do since these are crimminal accusations and not rules violations but seriously, you have an university covering up crimminal activity for the sake of it's own athletic department and the NCAA should sanction them. This is obviously different from some off campus bar fight etc.

Grand Jury reports by their very nature include only selected portions of one side of the story. From what we know for sure one man committed heinous acts and several others that have been charged lied about what they knew. Any judgment beyond that at time is defintely premature and possibly erroneous. There may be others yet unnamed who committed heinous acts also...the investigation will hopefully uncover that if it happened.

I agree that Sandusky still having access to athletic department facilities was a failure of the Penn State athletic administration (certainly not limited to just the head football coach), top university administration, and university governing board. They all failed and they all should be accountable for that, not just Paterno.

We've seen this act before. Remember Enron's Ken Lay? Don't be surprised if this is more than Joe Paterno can take. He's 84-yrs old.

This reeks of the vendetta to get rid of Paterno that failed originally in 2004 but finally succeeded last night.

Why do I think this way...consider this.....

The GA who witnessed the shower incident reported it to his supervisor.
That supervisor (Paterno) reported it to his supervisor who in turn eventually perjured himself.

One of those two men will be coaching for Penn State on Saturday. IMO the wrong one will be. Either both or neither should be continue to be employed by Penn State. Retirement for Paterno at the end of the season was adequate. But the BoT faction that wanted him out in 2004 wasn't about to let that happen.

IMO this was the excuse the Board of Trustees was looking for to get rid of Paterno, albeit a good one. That press conference was sketchy and so was the letter to Paterno telling him to call to be told he was fired. Poorly handled.

My personal belief - What Paterno did not do was terrible and inexcusable. You can argue that he fulfilled blahdity blah obligation, but he wielded power to stop what was happening (the same power he used to entrench himself when the Board of Trustees wanted him out in 04) and effectively did nothing. Terrible. Hate to hear what happened, hate to see a legend go down like this. It's all ugly as sin.

We are close to an agreement on that statement. If he was involved in a cover-up, it will come out. If he was stupid, it will come out. If he was negligent, it will come out. If he did what he was required to do, it will come out. In the meantime, we just don't know.

What I do know is for our system of government to work ... prove it. I would say the same thing about you, Charlie Manson or Amanda Knox.

Now .... I have to get to work.

Re: My Thoughts On Joe Pa

I don't think most people understand the power that Paterno held. When they asked him to retire in 2004, he told them that he would retire when he was ready, not when they were ready, even though he'd had 4 losing seasons in the last 5 years. Paterno, alone, was responsible for Sandusky hanging out in the fieldhouse and taking showers with 10 year old boys. Paterno had to know what was going on and he had the power to stop it. Nobody at Penn State was going to challenge Paterno as he had already proven when they could not get him to retire. He had become an arrogant old man that carried unlimited power because everybody was afraid of him. When other coaches saw Sandusky bringing kids to the fieldhouse, they knew that he had Paterno's approval and nobody was going to challenge Paterno. Paterno alone, was the one man that could have stopped this evil behavior by Sanduski, and, he did nothing. Paterno was obsessed with breaking Eddie Robinson's record and his greed and his unlimited power had blinded him to what was going on right under his nose. Power, arrogance, and greed have now brought down Paterno and Penn State. He has to ask himself now. Was the record worth it?

I agree. I think the reason you see so many focused on Paterno is because so many are sticking up for him (specifically in the Happy Valley community) while there isn't really anyone doing that with the others.

If it is found that he minimized --or if he was disingenuous in any way-- with his accounting, he could still be in a lot of trouble legally.

I am one of those who believe Paterno definitely knew more, and didn't fully report. Here's why: Paterno's first trouble with Sandusky came in late 1998, when the Penn St campus police were brought in to investigate a similar complaint. Sandusky, only 55 yrs old at the time, resigned shortly thereafter, and was never mentioned as a candidate for another coaching job. This begs the question, was Sandusky forced to resign as part of a "deal" to sweep the event under the rug?

Fast forward to 2002, and McQueary witnesses the alleged sex act between Sandusky and a naked 10-yr old boy in the football locker room. The deal ultimately gets reported to Paterno. Are you telling me Paterno's "moral" and "legal" radar shouldn't be up after this latest incident? You gotta be kidding me. This event was apparently investigated (by Penn St) again, and nothing happened to Sandusky.

And to make matters worse --despite having all this personal knowledge of Sandusky already being investigated TWICE by Penn St officials for issues with children-- Paterno continues to let Sandusky use the Penn St locker room for his dalliances.

To me, Paterno is either part of a massive cover-up, or he's just plain stupid.

I have been thinking the exact same thing all week. With all of this going on since 94, it's my belief that paterno knew about it and chose to ignore it while certain members of the administration covered it up to protect the university from bad pub. And RC, I do realize that this is a "rush to judgement" but IMO it's common sense based on the info we have.

How is this a "rush to judgment"? You do realize the grand jury report is out, right (have you read it?), and that the evidence contained in it is given under oath?

And in the latest, McQueary won't be coaching Saturday after all. Things like multiple threats on his life keep getting in the way.

The pressure-cooker on this story needs to be turned off before numerous completely innocent parties in this are tainted beyond repair. There will be plenty of time to sort the guilty out from those who are in fact innocent.
I agree with you, RC. Not that it matters. Alot of people in the media are making judgements without really knowing exactly how everything occurred.

My understanding is that allegations of Sandusky's behavior were made to the District Attorney's office as early as 1998. The DA at the time has apparently dropped off the face of the earth. It would seem that law enforcement agencies have been aware of this for at least 12 years. I'm not making any type of judgement about Paterno or any involved, but apparently somebody, possibly Paterno, DID contact law enforcement. Why they chose to do nothing about it is apparently unknown, as I have heard very little about what the police, et al, did or did not do, or how much they knew.

Rush to judgment? I cant believe people are really saying that? You don't need to prove Paterno's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt to take away his job. You would only need that to put him in jail which he probably deserves. When you harm kids whether directly or indirectly you do not deserve any mercy from the court of public opinion.

He looks frail. I don't expect him to last a year - and this won't have nearly been hashed and rehashed while he's still living. It will be very ugly for a long time!
