    NMSU Game: By the Numbers

It's a slow day at the office. Seems like everyone's on vacation, which could be the case. Anyway, I compiled some numbers for pregame analysis if anyone's interested. I'm a stat freak, so this is relevant to my interests.

    NMSU Tech
    Passing avg 289.1 249.8
    Rushing avg 119.9 145.7
    Scoring O 27.1 29.4
    Scoring D 37.3 24.5
    Pass D 256.7 264.9
    Rush D 204.5 118.6
    T/O Margin -1 +10
    3rd Down Conv % 41.72 37.04
Penalties against avg 7.5 for 56.5 yds 7.3 for 67.3 yds
    Red Zone TD % 58.82% 61.9%
    Red Zone FG % 17.65% 21.43%
    RZ Total scoring % 76.47% 83.33%
    RZ scoring against % 80.36% 96.30%
    3rd down conv against % 46.21% 32.79%
    Punting 38.89 45.6
    KO Returns 24.9 22.13
    Sacks (allowed) 15 (26) 25 (24)
    QB hurries (allowed) 4 (15) 28 (21)
    Forced fumbles (allowed) 8 (16) 8 (8)
    Blocked kicks (allowed) 0 (2) 3 (2)
    Pass breakups (allowed) 38 (37) 51 (43)

I could've put more stats up, but this seemed like enough for now. Just from looking at these, NMSU seems to be a team that doesn't have much of a pass rush, or defense to speak of really. They're giving up 460+ yards and 37 points a game. Looks like they're fumble-prone also. No doubt they'll be able to score a few points, but this game has the makings of our offense putting up numbers similar to the Fresno game. Go out and take care of business, and that 20+ point line will make all the sense in the world.

It seems like we need to run the ball on them and chew up the clock so they won't pass on us too much.

The pending weather may dictate the offense in this one.....on both sides.

Tech opened as a 20 point favorite, but I think that's a little high. We haven't won big at home this season, and weather could be a factor. But, I still think the Dogs should win. Will Creer be back?

We need Creer. Lee played well but we need two backs to run our offense IMHO.

If he is, let's keep it a surprise.

I don't like our pass defense, so we need to REALLY focus on that for this game. They won't be able to run on us and we should easily win the TO battle. We need to show off our offense this game and our defense play just like the last few games.

Turnover margin. We are +10. They are -1. That's the most telling stat of the bunch. We've been causing a lot lately, and we have been protecting the ball lately. We caused some big turnovers against Nevada to prevent them from scoring. I think our difference in the turnover department wins this game for us. I think they come out throwing, and I think they throw, throw, and throw some more. I hope we get after the QB, and we could cause some problems. I think the stats will be a little off for this game because they may become one dimensional early, and after a while, yards start to pile up.

I too think they will have trouble running the ball against us. I have seen bits and pieces of their games this year and they can throw the ball. I hope the offense that played against Fresno shows up for this one.

The thing about this that scares me is that turnover margin has to be the most likely stat to regress to mean.

It's just not something you can rely on. Too much luck involved.

I see what you're saying, but I think it shows that we have a defense that causes turnovers and an offense that protects the ball. I know that predicting turnovers is a tricky game, but at this point in the season, it is easier to see.

I see us winning by 24, 38-14 IMO. We should be able to handle them fairly easily just looking at common opponents.

Re: NMSU Game: By the Numbers

I think the passing numbers on our defense are skewed by the Houston and Hawaii games. Having 17 interceptions looks like decent pass defense to me. Plus, like I've said before, its hard to complete a pass from flat on your back.
