Its not just that. Many schools are affiliated with conferences for things like academics rather than athletics. Imagine the conversation at Northwestern when they get told their football team isn't doing well enough so they're being kicked out of the conference for a while.

That system works great...for private institutions that aren't tied to universities.

I suspect the best system anyway is private amatuer teams owned by universities and subject to free market principles anyway.
