I only lived in Caruthers, but I did have some good memories of that place![]()
You know you're getting old when dorms are built AFTER you graduate and are torn down BEFORE you die!!!!
I lived on the 8th Floor of Caruthers in the "Penthouse." Had many good times there with buddies; will be sad to see it go.
Best thing for SGA to do is not advertise it to much. I doubt a high percentage of student will vote and the ones that do will be the ones who want the facility. Similar to the change for change. you would be amazed at how many student have no idea that there was a $40? increase in tuition. Think that was the number.
Of all the dorms I stayed in Carruthers was the nicest back when it was new. Nielson was okay because I didn't have a roommate. I probably shouldn't count Richardson because we had three to a room, although it wasn't air conditioned. There wasn't any other place to stay in Ruston in those days. By my senior year there were getting to be more places -- note no roommate my senior year. I can see now they're quite an eyesore and need to go. There are no fond memories of either. They were just a place to stay. Of course the dorm all the men hated they tried to restore. I have never heard of any "fond" memories of Hale Hall and I have talked to guys who lived there back in the 50's. It was ugly then so they build a replica of the ugliest dorm on campus.
BTW what happened to the women's dorm with suites and balconies. It was the newest but it's been gone a long time. Was there structural problems or were the women throwing themselves off the balconies?
For a hick kid from North Louisiana, I thought Hale was the Waldorf. It all depends on one's perspective.
I think ya'll are selling our student body short, this is an enhancement to Tech and most students know that upgrades/enhancements only increase the value of their degree. I know when I was there and we did the first 20 for 20, I didn't care about adding parking lots, I understood this would increase Techs footprint and allow for new buildings.
I only say this as a former student who voted yes for "change for change", I for one am for it because of the reasons you stated in your post. But many students do not get into athletics and only see the $ sign. With already rising cost in tuition, books, cost of living, etc., $90 a year is a lot to students. All that said I do hope the positives outweigh any negatives and it passes, which I suspect it will.
I applaud our students for taking on this fee. The majority of our alumni won't kick in $100 per year.
I think you guys will get this done. Historically, these votes are low turnouts, at least they were on our campus. Also, a similar fee for us passed with faculty actively campaigning against it. Hopefully, you all don't have to deal with that.
Ill vote for it.
I stayed on the 7th floor of Caruthers. I remember one day somebody had stapled a dead squirrel to back wall of the only elevator that worked and then pulled the light bulbs out. When I got on the elevator that morning some guy warned me not to touch the back wall. I reallized why when we got to first floor and the light from the hallway displayed the surprise someone left! Fun times, how I miss college..........![]()
