    St. David of Wales
    (d. 589?)

    Listen to Audio
David is the patron saint of Wales and perhaps the most famous of British saints. Ironically, we have little reliable information about him.

It is known that he became a priest, engaged in missionary work and founded many monasteries, including his principal abbey in southwestern Wales. Many stories and legends sprang up about David and his Welsh monks. Their austerity was extreme. They worked in silence without the help of animals to till the soil. Their food was limited to bread, vegetables and water.

In about the year 550, David attended a synod where his eloquence impressed his fellow monks to such a degree that he was elected primate of the region. The episcopal see was moved to Mynyw, where he had his monastery (now called St. David's). He ruled his diocese until he had reached a very old age. His last words to his monks and subjects were: "Be joyful, brothers and sisters. Keep your faith, and do the little things that you have seen and heard with me."

St. David is pictured standing on a mound with a dove on his shoulder. The legend is that once while he was preaching a dove descended to his shoulder and the earth rose to lift him high above the people so that he could be heard. Over 50 churches in South Wales were dedicated to him in pre-Reformation days.

    Comment:

Were we restricted to hard manual labor and a diet of bread, vegetables and water, most of us would find little reason to rejoice. Yet joy is what David urged on his brothers as he lay dying. Perhaps he could say that to them—and to us—because he lived in and nurtured a constant awareness of God’s nearness. For, as someone once said, “Joy is the infallible sign of God’s presence.” May his intercession bless us with the same awareness!

    Patron Saint of:

    Poets
    Wales

    National Banana Cream Pie Day

    March 2nd, 2012

Perhaps the most popular of the cream pie family, banana cream was even voted the soldiers' favorite dessert in a survey conducted by the US Armed Forces in 1951. This result lead to a top secret study to determine if banana cream pie could be altered to create super human strength in the soldiers who consumed it, but it was quickly decided that it was too comical a dessert to be used for such dubious purposes.

    National Old Stuff Day

    March 2nd, 2012

Same stuff, different day. If you find that you've grown bored with your routine, today's the time to shake things up. And we don't mean having cereal instead of toast in the morning. We mean real change. Learn to play the tambourine. Start growing your own vegetables. Climb Mount Everest. Well, maybe you don't need to worry about Mount Everest yet. But someday...

I now have the opinion this thread does not "amble off subject" any more than almost any other thread. The difference being, the "ambling off" on this thread is generally not related to personal attacks, gotchas, etc.

LOL. You didn't know? You have to keep up better, Derrek.

Is your boy a baseball player, too? I bet he is.

Re: If you want a thread to die

    Hi Joey,
No, Josh is just a football player, alot like Gary as a lineman. Gary's boy is more like me, he's playing catcher at Glenbrook.

btw, I have a framed action pic that you took of me, Randy Ray, Anthony Douglas and Raymond Tate running a play for Minden. We were in a power-I, ha ha...bet you'll never see that formation again.

How's Aaron and your family? How's Faith and her family?

I'd ask you about one of Gary's old buddies, guy named Dwayne, but, I see his posts ALL over this board. Hard not to keep up with him.

    If Pets Had Thumbs Day

You trained your dog how to high five. Now just imagine what he could do with opposable thumbs! He could give you a thumbs up. Or thumb wrestle. Whose got two thumbs and eats out of the garbage? This guy.

    National Anthem Day

    March 3rd, 2012

You don't need to know all the words to the national anthem to appreciate its history. On this day in 1931, 'The Star Spangled Banner' was adopted as America's national anthem. The lyrics of the song were taken from Francis Scott Key's poem about the battle at Fort McHenry in the war of 1812 and set to the melody of a popular British drinking song. Today 'The Star Spangled Banner' is played to kick off large public events and sports games. So next time you hear it, just try to sing 'Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light,' then chime in again at 'And the rockets' red glare!' Close enough.

National I Want You To Be Happy Day

    March 3rd, 2012

It's okay if your immediate response to this request is one of skepticism. 'Why do you want me to be happy? You're not borrowing my car again, if that's what this is about.' We've all gotten used to the what's-in-it-for-me mentality so we don't believe someone would genuinely wish us well without a hidden agenda. But today's different, so go out into the world and aim to make everyone around you crack a smile.
