Girl Scouts Day
March 12th, 2012
You know them as the keepers of the coveted cookies that are only sold but once a year. Yet girl scouts stay busy year round with camping, crafting, and community activities. Since its establishment in 1912, it's estimated that over 50 million American women have been girl scouts.
National Alfred Hitchcock Day
March 12th, 2012
Dial C for creepy! Hitchcock is the cinematic pioneer behind so many classic thrillers. Diehard fans, as well as the easily distractible, can spot Hitchcock making cameo appearances in nearly all of his films. He was, for instance, a pet shop customer in The Birds and a bus passenger in To Catch A Thief.
Plant a Flower Day
March 12th, 2012
'But wait,' you say. 'It's winter and the ground's still frozen.' / Yes, that's true, but if you just -- / 'I mean, I'm not gonna spend all afternoon in the cold for nothing.' / Well why don't you just put on a jacket if you're so worried about it? Oh now we're getting off topic. Just plant a flower inside. Appreciate it from the warmth of your house. Then, come springtime, move it outside where it can bask in the sun and get to know the honeybees.
Earmuff Day
March 13th, 2012
Earmuffs were invented by 15-year-old Chester Greenwood in 1873 as a way to keep his ears toasty in the frigid Maine winter as he walked his eight mile route to sell eggs door to door. We can just hear Greenwood as an old man, 'You kids with your fancy hats and your newfangled hoodies. When I was your age, I had to walk eight miles, every day, up hill, in a blizzard. Heck, I had to invent earmuffs just to keep my ears from freezing off.'
National Jewel Day
March 13th, 2012
They say diamonds are a girl's best friend, but that girl may have fallen for some clever marketing. With a whole world of colorful jewels, who says diamond is king? Certainly not the royal family. Fergie, the Duchess of York, received a ruby engagement ring from Prince Andrew, while Princess Diana donned a sapphire.
Learn about Butterflies Day
March 14th, 2012
Many of us first learned about the butterfly as kids. We studied how a little caterpillar would wind itself up in a cocoon and emerge later with giant colorful wings. This may have prompted some of us to attempt to keep caterpillars as pets, but we all know how that turned out. Oh well. Lesson learned.
National Pi Day
March 14th, 2012
Well isn't this clever. Pi is the value 3.14 and today is 3/14. Get it? Ha. We know pretty much nothing more about Pi to pass along to you (because oh boy is it confusing). But how about this, did you know it's also Albert Einstein's birthday today?
National Potato Chip Day
March 14th, 2012
Did you know that on the average day, the US consumes more potato chips than any other country in the world? Makes sense. We love them as companions to sandwiches, dunked in dip at picnics, or as a midday snack. Whether you're a traditionalist and opt for the plain variety, or you prefer to dine on one of those fancy new designer chips, be sure to contribute to America's daily average. We've got a rep to protect!
Seems like everytime I post in a thread, it dies. Thought I'd give this one a shot.![]()

National Everything You Think Is Wrong Day
March 15th, 2012
Think you know everything? Think again. Today, any time you think about anything, just stop. Because you're wrong. Unless you think you need to go to work. You probably need to do that. And it's okay to think you need to eat something. And if you think you need to put on some pants before you leave the house, by all means, do so.
