Let them try and stand on their own two feet. LSU is going to to keep reducing their money supply til they end up nothing more than a small CC anyway. We will keep getting their better students anyway. The influx of lsu wantabes would probably be sickening anyway.

It should be obvious by now that the only people that have openly campaigned against the merger are LSUS faculty and administrators who are afraid of losing their jobs or (more importantly to some) their power and influence and the few students that they have brainwashed. Some may also be scared of how this move could cement LA Tech as North Louisiana's school resulting in ever increasing enrollment. Most high school kids are lemmings and will fall in line with what most of their peers do. This move will likely hurt Northwestern State as well and I wouldn't be surprised to start hearing anti-merger sentiments coming out of that area as well. Within a decade of a merger, I think Tech's enrollment would push 20,000 with about 12,000 in Shreveport and about 8,000 in Ruston. And the success of the merger may allow the state to try merging other campuses around the state. Time to trim some deadwood from the state coffers.
Don't give this clown any attention. I saw his drivel and chose not to link it. He links his blog on all the Times-Picayune and Advocate articles begging for attention. He's been spouting off nonsense throughout this entire process. Sadow should spend more time and effort on his job than ranting on his blog. Apparently he's a terrible teacher. His students have given him awful reviews. He'd probably be the first professor that Tech fires.

I didn't mind reading what he had to say. He spent alot of time deriding the merger and not much coming up with a better alternative for the citizens of S'port/Bossier. His sole solution, as I can gather, is to move LSU-S to a new governing structure (ULS). That would still require a name change and would be like starting from scratch, wouldn't it? I think the local business leaders want LaTech to take over because of its progress in the midst of crises and on account LaTech's interest in forming a top-tier university in NORTH Louisiana. LSU is not going to do that.
At the town hall meeting, DR mentioned progressive promotion of colleges in S'port. He mentioned (going from memory): a law school for north la, a school of optometry, school of performing arts, and another engineering tract (mineral?).
These are examples of folks that have a very narrow view of what is best for Shreveport-Bossier City and north Louisiana! They are using pure emotion, selfish agenda, or contemptuous rhetoric to promote a superfluous cause to further their own path without consideration of what is best for everyone and their community.
They are not businessmen/women who have to wake up every morning and worry about the bottom-line. Some of these are “academics” worried about their jobs. However, if they did their jobs they wouldn’t have to worry about it as Wayne Hogue so eloquently stated in his many comments and opinions in the commentary/opinion section of S’port Times. The man has the big picture and knows what’s going on in the landscape of Louisiana and higher ED! It comes down to what is best for the good of Shreveport-Bossier City.
The LSU system = Baton Rouge and they don’t give a rats pituty as to what happens in Shreveport, Alexandria, Monroe, Lafayette, Lake Charles, New Orleans, Ruston, Minden, et al as long as Baton Rouge takes precedence over everything else as per recommendations made by the “Louisiana Flagship Coalition.”
I just have to say to all of the LSUS folks out there…if you think that anything is going to change by staying in the LSU system because you’re a “Tiger”…it’s not because you’re not a “Tiger”…for Pete’s sake you’re a “Pilot” and it’s a pipe dream to think that LSUS is going to be saved by the campus in Baton Rouge or your diploma has more significance behind it because it has “LSU”-Shreveport pasted somewhere on it! To accept the status quo is a bad misstep. Besides it hasn’t gotten you anywhere since the creation of the Shreveport campus and what makes you think that anything will change? It just dumbfounds me to think that you want to continue down this road!
LSU=BR wants no more to be a part of you as you want to be a part of La Tech! Misleading and deceptive commentary from the likes of Mary G. Jarzabek and Charlene Handford Barlow or this goob Jeffrey Sadow are self-seeking in regards of what is in the best interests for their community! Then you have the likes of Butch Bellah who are using it as a platform to espouse hate for anything TECH because he’s a ULALALALALA grad! I left Louisiana and have no desires to return (except to see family during the holidays and watch TECH football) because of people like this who can’t see the forest because of the trees. It’s this mindset that has held Louisiana back but more specifically northwest/central Louisiana.
You're correct boxerdog. But it is a bitter eye-opener for the Shreveport business community and citizens concerned about Shreveport's future to learn that their own North Louisiana senators have been the ones to betray them at the alter of LSU and Southern.
Jindal supports the merger, but probably does not have enough political capital remaining to fight this battle along with the much larger retirement benefits battle about to be waged. Without Jindal's active support, Tarver, Adley and Peacock will be directly responsible for the death of the merger legislation.
LFR...and I just don't get! Am i missing something? I guess that I have been so far removed from louisiana by living here in Texas for the past 20+ years. In Texas, they would have been gone a long time ago.
Anybody who has a better solution than the merger for the people of north La--BRING IT? I don't think professor's "easy" (Ross Perot) solution of simply moving LSU-S to another system is tenable. First off, they would have to rename the school without the letters "LSU" in the name---that alone would not fly! Second, they would basically have to build the school, with it's present infrastructure, into a top-tier research university. I didn't realize that would be so easy....

Why is he against the merger? Well, he's suspicious and nervous. He thinks Tech has been conspiring behind the scenes for a while to takeover LSUS.
Sadly, the only reason for the opposition is the attachment to those 3 little letters.

Brian- how ironic that the Chair of the very group that would not allow Dr.Rozeman to attend its meeting, the very group that spent Alunmi funds to run a full page ad that was not truthful, the very group that has indicated it doesnt wish to be a part of RiverBend Review this year, is once again looking backward to remember the past. Had you allowed information to be shared with your group, you would realize LSUS is in trouble. We have lost $ 8.5 million in funding over the past few years. Our student enrollment has dropped over 400 FTE in the past two years. We are facing a shortfall of $71 million in higher ed before the end of this fiscal year, and are looking at another $300 million in cuts starting July 1, 2012. These are the facts Brian. We do have a real working knowledge of higher education,as we have been advocating for all of higher ed over the past many years here in Baton Rouge. The LSU Commitment plan isnt worth the paper it is written on. There is no funding to back it up,according to testimony by LSU on Monday here in Baton Rouge. They are going to have raise money from donors in Shreveport to pay for it. Who is going to make that ask? Dr. Lombardi? Gone. Dr. Martin? Gone. The administration at LSUS, or the faculty,or the alumni association,all who have been extremely critical of the business leaders, and Community Foundation here in Shreveport? The LSU System is falling apart. LSU One, and the Flagship Coalition have their own agenda,and it doesnt include LSUS. Attacking the BOR hasn't worked for the past, and it certainly did not work before the House Higher Ed Committe on Tuesday.In case you missed it the vote was 14-4 to support the merger. If you want to be a mad at somebody be mad at those that have slashed funding to higher ed over the past few years. Be mad at those who allow incompetent folks to be appointed to these higher ed boards. Be mad at those who say they support LSUS but dont contribute financially.
