But, I disagree with the bolded statement. Book banning is an old form of censorship. Asking a university to remove an academic program because of one's personal bias is another form of censorship. ULL's President said there are over 200 similar programs of study in our country. Should they all be banned? Would you support a move to remove the Religious Studies program from the Texas university that was mentioned earlier in this thread? (I wouldn't.)
I wasn't talking about book censorship. I was basically saying that nobody cares about a book of fiction in a library. Establishing a curriculum and adding LGBT content to non-LGBT courses is a big deal. Thus, the big difference. BTW Fifty Shades of Grey is not in ULL's library catalog.

I already commented on that and you missed it.

How would removing a book from library shelves not be book censorship? And many people did care about a book of fiction in a library--that one, in particular. I don't see a big difference in book banning and trouncing on academic freedom. BTW, I never said Fifty Shades was in ULL's library.

Maybe Congressman Landry believes that if he can get an academic minor in LGBT removed, LGBTQI people will cease to exist!

Perhaps I missed it, but I thought the reason he gave for wanting the minor removed was because it "fails to provide an economic benefit to the participates or financial sense for the taxpayer." From the article it mentions nothing of a bias and even offered a rebuttal from the assistant program director to the representative's remarks. I feel that they would have taken a shot at his bias if he had brought it up. You either know the representative well enough to elaborate on his beliefs or you fabricated "his personal intolerance of diversity" for your talking points.

You're right. His stated reason is as you have written. I didn't fabricate his intolerance or bias; I would say I extrapolated it from his stance on several social issues such as DOMA, civil unions, and domestic partnerships. But, this is absolutely more my opinion than a fact.

Your opinion: do you think his objection to this academic minor has nothing to do with his views on LGBT issues? If ULL proposed a degree program in basket weaving, do you think he would be as upset?

Of course removing a book from the library would be considered censorship, but I never said anything about censorship. I was just calling you out for making a ridiculous assumption that Landry would have that book removed from the library, and I did not realize you were trying to be funny. You were the one who brought up censorship so you could continue on your ridiculous soapbox. I know you didn't claim Fifty Shades was in their library, and that's why I prefaced my statement with "BTW." Regardless, book censorship is futile in today's world because anybody can get whatever they are looking for on the internet.

I see now what you were meaning. The written word is less nuanced than when spoken. Sorry I missed your point.

I only disagree with one point of your post--not sure why my "soapbox" is any more ridiculous than anyone else's. It's my opinion.
