According to C.B. Forgotston, Bobby Jindal is laying the groundwork for Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret to become the next LSU-BR Chancellor/LSU System President.

The blog also states that current Chancellor/President William Jenkins hinted that Jindal wants to dump the Charity Hopital System.

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II

Someone with a background in academia “can very rarely” be president Jenkins said. The position calls for a “nontraditional” candidate preferably with a business background, he said.

This what I meant about no PhDs need apply for the ULS prez position. Otherwise intelligent folks lose all their common sense once they receive a PhD. It's a strange phenomenon! Actually, I'm partially joking, but only partially, mind you.

A PhD tried to argue with me on this point, insisting that ONLY someone with a PhD is qualified to run a university full of other PhDs. I let him dig a deep hole first, then countered with:

Oh, really? So you're saying that ONLY a MD is qualified to run a hospital?

    Well, no, ah, well..

I helped him out of his jam: Exactly! The MDs in a hospital are highly skilled, intelligent people whom I admire greatly. They need to be free to practice their trade, improve their skills, keep up with ever-changing technologies and new break-throughs in medicine. They don't need to be burdened with the everyday running of the hospital. Ya know, personnel issues, vendor issues, budget concerns, the market, and now obummercare which will wreck hospitals across the nation, etc...

    He nodded.

Well then! The same can be said for our institutions of higher learning. PhDs should be in the classroom filling minds with mush. Sharing their great knowledge with the next generation of scholars. And! leave the BUSINESS of running the university to an MBA.

Yeah....you're right, he admitted. And added, I know I wouldn't be any good at managing the day to day operations of a university. Too many details, too much business to handle, he said.

I gave him a lollipop, patted him on the shoulder, and sent him back to his classroom where he could teach.

MBAs are a dime-a-dozen and not very hard to get. What is needed is administrative experience and a record of success - not a specific type of degree.

"not a specific type of degree."
Exactly the point I made the other day. No particular degree should be excluded. Credentials, experience, and track records are the things that matter. I agree that many with a Ph.D are not well-suited for administrative positions, but that shouldn't exclude them all.

I do wonder who all the "Ph.D. Haters" think taught the MBAs and DBAs.

Surgeons run hospitals, chefs run restaurants, historians run museums, and pastors run churches.

It's typical for an institution's dominant profession to also end up running the joint. And it almost always makes trouble because rarely were those professionals also equiped with any kind of management skills. But as long as that profession is in control, they're not gonna change the job description for the top post. It takes a very, very self-aware pharmacist to recognize he or she lacks the skills or training to also run a drugstore.

And dont get me started on having civil engineers run your highway department ...

Not as often as you would think. And those hospitals that do have MD as President/CEO are usually research hospitals, like MD Anderson, and that President really is over all the research and someone else handles the other administrative functions.

    Ok, thanks for that.

But I was trying to make a broader point --

I think PhDs taught MBAs. Which is exactly my point. They belong IN the classroom, teaching. They do a good job of teaching. Never said anything to the contrary.

Running an organization? That's another story.
