See ya there Stray!
Yes, they were tough, but no touger than A&M. The USU defense didn't stop us. We stopped ourselves.
If CC hadn't slipped down he'd have gotten out of bounds to stop the clock, but yes, the ref was obviously taking extra time to allow the defense to set.
Um, The Utah State defense ABSOLUTELY KICKED OUR ASSES until 8:17 left in the 3rd quarter! We had a whopping 3 points up to that point and were down 3 - 27! If we had their defense we'd be undefeated right now.
How many times did we have the ball in the red zone and not score? They did not stop us. We just didn't score.
You said they kicked our asses. I suppose we have different perspectives, but getting in the red zone and coming away with no points generally points to other breakdowns like we saw last night...
-penalties
-special team breakdowns
-poor play calling
-turn overs
I don't consider those things being caused by the defense, but if that is the way you see it, I understand
I see it as we got into the red zone and got DENIED by a good defense. Call it poor execution or whatever, but the fact is the Utah State defense didn't allow the points to go on the scoreboard. They didn't drop a single INT opportunity like our previous opponents have.
We had 629 yards total offense. 37 first downs.
I doubt USU's defense is feeling particularly good about itself.
We made mistakes. Patton dropped a TD pass and two plays later, our FG attempt was blocked. CC threw two INTs in the EZ. What if we came away with a FG each time instead? Hmmmm....
Yeah, USU has a good defense. I said that before the game, I say that now. But having a good defense means you get torched for 600+ yds and 40+ points when you play this offense.
We did beat ourselves. But, we would have escaped with a win, nonetheless, had we played a crappy team. USU is good, and they made us pay for our mistakes. As did aTm.
Looking back you are closer to being right than I thought. We had 3 red zone opportunities during the time you referenced, but only came away with 3 pts.
In CC's defense he did make better passes to the USU defenders than he had been making to the other defenders who had been dropping them![]()
Possessions 1,2, and 3 = punt, punt, punt. That ain't high powered.
Guys we lost the game, and have yet to prove we can beat a good team. Look at our opponents records. We have one chance left to beat a good team. The past is what it is and all the posting in the world won't change that. Let's talk about what we have to do to focus and beat a good team.
