    Re: Serious gun control questions

Perhaps the U.S. should "pull out" of Chicago?

Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago.

221 killed in Iraq AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the
    entire US.

    President: Barack Hussein Obama

    Senator: Dick Durbin

    House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr.

    Governor: Pat Quinn

    House leader: Mike Madigan

Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike)

    Mayor: Rahm Emanuel

The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago .

Of course, they're all blaming each other.

Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country.

Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country.

Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country.

Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois.

And he is going to 'fix' Washington politics for us???

George Ryan is no longer Governor, he is in the big house. Of course he was
replaced by Rob Blajegovitch who is...that's right, also in the big house.
And Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned a couple of weeks ago. That is
because he is fighting being sent to...that's right, the big house.

The Land of Lincoln, where our governors make our license plates.

But you know what? As long as they keep providing entitlements to the
population of Chicago, nothing is going to change, except the state will go
    broke before the country does.

Another question I have about the new focus on mental health (vs. gun control) is whether the mass murderers in the famous shootings (e.g., Sandy Hook, Aurora, Va. Tech, Columbine) had the kind of documented mental health history that would have limited their access to guns.
    Adam Lanza- Sandy Hook
TBD. Doesn't appear to of had any documented mental health history prior to shooting.

    James Holmes - Aurora
TBD. Defense team claims he was a psychiatric patient.
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/27/justic...html?hpt=hp_t1

    Seung-Hiu Cho- Virginia Tech
Court-ordered psychiatric assessment found him "mentall ill and in need of hospitalization"
    http://abcnews.go.com/US/print?id=3052278
Family had attempted to get him help since 8 years old (long before the Virginia assessment).
    Further reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seung-H...ric_assessment

Eric Harris & Dylan Kleibold - Columbine
No documented mental health history prior to shooting. Possibly had psychiatric treatment done as part of program for juvenile offenders but haven't found anything definitive on it. Harris did have anger management classes as part of the program. Both cleared the program easily. Post-massacre evaluation is irrelevant.

    Andrew Kehoe - Bath bombing
No documented mental health history prior to bombing. Granted, mental health wasn't really a "thing" in the 1920's.

These standout more to me than the national conscience because of I was in middle school during these.

Mitchell Johnson & Andrew Golden - Jonesboro, AR
No documented mental health history prior to shooting.

Michael Carneal - Heath High School
No documented mental health history prior to shooting.

Luke Woodham - Pearl High School
No documented mental health history prior to shooting.

Though I agree we need more mental health programs, and yes even institutionalization, I don't think it is necessarily the right way to go in this discussion. Though the "worst" cases typically have some mental health element, most gun crimes do not, imo. The point is to reduce gun crime but not have one tool replaced by another. The problem is not the tool, it is the person. We can't eliminate the variously numerous grievances that lead to a person harming another and the tool is never the reason for the harm.

Thanks for all the background, JB. That's about as I suspected. That's the problem with focusing on mental health care as THE answer to these cases--many of the killers wouldn't have qualified for any weapons exception. This seems like a bad time for Jindal to open the door for the elimination of school counselor positions. Let's hope the local districts and their constituents stand firm.

    Now we're talking!

GOP congressman threatens impeachment if Obama uses executive action for gun control
    5:20 PM 01/14/201

Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman threatened Monday afternoon that he would file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he institutes gun control measures with an executive order.
Stockman warned that such executive orders would be “unconstitutional” and “infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.” (RELATED: Levin: If Obama sidesteps Congress on debt ceiling, ‘no choice’ but impeachment)
“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,” Stockman said in a statement.

Reported, but not sure it's been confirmed. That brings into question just how "mental illness" is/will be defined in these laws. Many mental illnesses are treatable and can even be overcome. Will a major depressive episode in one's history disqualify him or her from purchasing a gun? Or, if one episode wouldn't rule someone out, how much time has to pass? Who determines "health?" Just some interesting questions I'm sure lawmakers have had to consider in writing existing laws in other states. If nothing else, this should begin a fascinating debate.

Yeah, why spend time investigating the criminal when you can just pass nineteen executive orders taking away rights from law abiding citizens!!!!!!!

Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese: Obama Risks Impeachment If He Uses Executive Order for Gun Control

    Monday, 14 Jan 2013 09:14 PM
By Todd Beamon and Kathleen Walter

Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III declared in an exclusive Newsmax TV interview that President Barack Obama could easily be impeached if he bypassed Congress and enacted gun-control legislation by executive order.

Meese's comments came on the same day President Obama told the White House press corp at the last news conference of his first term that he was reviewing actions, including issuing executive orders, where he could take action without congressional approval to confront gun violence in the nation. Obama said he would present a plan within days.
