What I find funny is that Tech's home attendance record came against ULM, a team which they now refuse to play. You can't make this stuff up.
ULM The only team in North Louisiana with a Division 1 National Football Championship.
Why would we be willing to help pump artificial life into an athletic program that is the worst funded in the nation? ULM will eventually have no choice but to return it's football program to D-II status. Meanwhile, Tech will thrive as the only major college football program in north Louisiana. That's just how it is.
We used to draw realy high attendance for Northwestern in Shreveport, as well. We outgrew them. Same for ulm.... There was a time when we were rivals, but we outgrew them. It is so funny when people bring this up, but were not at the last game we played with them. I know they weren't at the last game, because I would have seen them in the 20 ulm fans that were there at their own stadium.
Does seem kind of heavy handed doesn't it. That is the the figure given on the La Tech Athletics website. I have been digging for 30 minutes trying to find the attendance figures for the Tech games in Indy Stadium against Miami in 2003, A&M in 1999, Ok St in 2002, A&M in 2012, and the NSU games. The only figures I can find are for last year's A&M game of 40,453. Seems like they would have the figures listed somewhere. Those are the only games I can think of that might have been comparable to the State Fair games. I know we used to pack the house.
On another, but related note, I did find the figures for the top five Indy Bowls:
1. LSU vs ND 50,459
2. Miss vs OK 49,873
3. Ga vs A&M 49,654
4. LSU vs Mich St 48,835
5. La Tech vs Maryland 48,325
Not too shabby.
