I did partake of many a blue plate specials at the P.O. Cafe as well. There was a KFC on California and a small burger joint at Trenton and California, I believe, as well. I almost starved that semester because my roommates and I would blow our meal money on booze, pool, and gals. We ate a lot of sardines and bologna that semester. I had to move back to the dorms to survive!

Sardines and bologna? Man you were eating high on the hog! Try eating grits for a month cooked on your hot plate. After a while you just don't want to eat them so you cook them half way eat a little then drink some water. Then you are full and don't have to eat as much.

The Burger King was built in Ruston in 1972 or 1973. I was one of the managers there for about a year.

Ate a few times at the P.O. Cafe. The only "fast food franshise" was the A&W Rootbeer, but I never went there. As I said earlier I had a seven day meal ticket, but dining hall food got tiresome after a while. My first year I ate in "Lower Tolliver". I believe mny sophomore year Wilson opened and Tolliver closed. Now it's back to Tolliver with Wilson being art studios or something.

Tolliver food was always better than Wilson. If you ate breakfast at Wilson (In those days I rarely got up in time to eat breakfast before class) you needed to be near a bathroom soon after you ate.

Seems like after they opened Wilson Tolliver would have lighter breakfasts -- do nuts, rolls, coffee etc. Can't remember what they served at Tolliver during regular meal times after Wilson opened. Being a Chem Engr. I was always up in time for breakfast. My last quarter I had a 7:30 class six days a week. They cut us no slack. I ended up having to take a Phys Ed. course that quarter and they gave no preference to Srs during registration. I ended up with general PE.

After Wilson opened, they had sandwiches and chips at Tolliver. I remember seeing handwritten signs in the men's restrooms around campus. The signs said flush twice...it is a long way to Tolliver! I remember when Wilson was being built in 1966.

When Wilson was finished those same signs had Tolliver scratched out and Wilson written in its place.

We all joked about Tolliver/Wilson food, but it was much better than most other college cafeterias. They were run by Morrisons. It's just that institutional food gets boring day after day after day.

For a treat the Student Center cafeteria was very acceptable.

"Back in the day" (1962-66) the donuts were deadly, but one could not resist. They were "high density." I think my "bowels" still have a grease ring from them.

What a thought, sitting in the middle of the "Tonk" drinking coffee, eating HD-donuts, and puffing on a pipe (or Camel, or what ever cig was being given out in sample packs in lower floor Tolliver) with who would become lifetime friends.

Most memorable moment was the odd feeling sitting there hearing it announced that JFK had been shot.

Another recurring memory of the "Tonk" was hearing the tune Telstar blasting over the sound system.

Oh yes. The good old days. Could get a cup of coffee and a do nut for 15 cents. I used to get a do nut and coffee at the Tonk before class until they started serving them at Tolliver. Dawgpix do you mean the cafeteria in the student center or the fast food line in the Tonk? I always thought the cafeteria served the same thing as Tolliver or Wilson, just that you didn't need a meal ticket to eat there. Memory is a little blurry there.

The "Morrison's" style cafeteria line. Every Sunday, roast beef carved on the spot, lemon icebox pies.
