I hope your home is one day filled with children who adore you.

I'm confident that when you've experienced that kind absolutely unrelenting, unconditional acceptance, you will rethink your position on the intrinsic worth of human life.

Until then, I am convinced to a certainty that a human being is qualitatively greater than the sum of his or her carbon chains. And that value must necessarily derive from something greater than what is naturally observable.

Just trying to show how ridiculous this thread's location has become. It has been NOTHING but a religious, philosophical, political debate for 30+ pages. This discussion is friendly(for the most part) and civil, but is misplaced.

Either resume talking about Spoon (the title of this thread), or split this thread into 2 and move one. It's beyond ridiculous to have this in the same forum as all of the recent positive threads surrounding our beloved womens basketball program. (And yes, I realize my posting will bump it up to the top of the forum is doesn't belong in.)

Spoon is a great person, who has been, and will continue to be, a great ambassador for our wonderful university. Please stop this madness in a thread with her name in the title.

The feeling of unconditional love for children would seem to have an evolutionary advantage.

I do know, with most species, you never want to place yourself between a momma and her "cubs." You probably won't get too mussed up being attacked by momma goldfish, and other critters like that. But, many years ago while hiking the Applachian (sp?) Trail my group found ourselves between momma black bear and her brood. Yikes! None of us got mauled because we broke in different directions, screaming and hollering, and probably confused momma bear.

Now, does an animal's instinct to protect its young rise to the level of "unconditional love?" In that case, and in similar ones, momma bear could have sought to save her own life and abandoned her cubs to their fate. She could not have been sure none of we human interlopers wasn't "packing". Her own safety didn't figure into the equation. She charged full speed to save her babies. Period.

I'm convinced that the chances of this thread being moved decrease with every post from y'all wanting it to be moved. That kind of psychology could form a whole new debate on this thread, which appears to be the norm. :icon_wink:

I referenced it by the default number of posts per page that the vast majority of people use.

It's amazing how reasonable individuals can be presented with the same evidence and arrive at different, even opposite conclusions.

Do you not agree that there would be an evolutionary advantage to the emotion?

Think about it. Children require lots of sacrifice and energy (things that we prefer to spend less of under normal circumstances). If there were no strong emotional bond, then people (and other animals) would be unlikely to keep them around for long. Of course, if you didn't protect them even as they all go through trying circumstances, your genes would not be passed on. Those that did exhibit the attachment are more likely to see their offspring survive and reproduce.

The fact that most other animals exhibit the same attachment is additional evidence to this point.

Do you not thing this is a reasonable understanding? How could one disagree?

Psychological reactance theory...it applies to more in this thread than the moderators' resistance to moving the thread.
