Dora staying in the backfield doesn't seem realistic. But he and Bates give us 2 solid DEs. Eddie Johnson hasn't shown that he can be Richie Casey, much less James Jordan. Tevin being healthy doesn't seem realistic. We are not as talented as LSU. But I see what you are saying... if our QB can play like Colby and our line can protect him, we have some nice pieces in place to be a good team.

Dora has the speed/quickness to get around most tackles. With another offseason of strength/conditioning and if he can stay healthy, I think he could be a nightmare to block and will wreak havoc.

Eddie Johnson hasn't really been targeted enough to show what he is. He's definitely more comparable to Jordan than Casey--it remains to be seen if he can be as competent.

I don't know about Tevin's rehab. But I have to agree that his being healthy is less than likely.

Sokol put up good numbers in juco. If he has a competitive spirit to him, I can see him being a solid qb.

The ones in question, in my opinion, are all on the offensive side of the ball. We have no line and we have a scheme that demands a quality line. What is so frustrating about Holtz refusal to keep doing what Petersen did at Marshall is that the up-tempo game allows us to dictate around our deficiencies. Holtz is continuing to work away from that philosophy. We WILL play possession football under HCSH and we don't have the personnel for it. We may have a great defense and still go 3-9. Dixon is a beast, but with a matador line and a bull headed coach, I don't think he'll be able to carry this O.

All schemes need a decent line, imo. You can't just hurry up and run a play and expect good results just because you hurried up and ran a play, right? All I can imagine is that you can only throw quick passes to the perimeter, but then you need guys who can do something with the ball after they catch it (like Patton was able to do). But the defense is likely expecting that since it's all you can do.

Some schemes hide a deficient OL better than others. Holtz took us from a scheme that hid it well to one that will not.

Well is an adjective that means in a successful way. The credentials of the uptempo spread in "leveling the playing field" are well documented. You may look them up if you wish. Our "wanna be" power/possession game reached it's zenith in Dooley's second year. MAYBE Holtz can get us back to bowl eligible, but it won't be for a while. We recruited specifically for the uptempo spread. We need a different type of player to play Holtz game. Holtz won't be around long enough to recruit for it (assuming he could successfully recruit for it), IMO.

We ran up tempo 1 year in the history of Tech football. We will be fine if we get good athletes.

We'll certainly see. Holtz has gone back on his word and is trying to play Dooley-ball. What chance do you give him of getting out of this season as an employee of our alma mater?

Holtz has a stud RB and a weak QB and line. He's playing to the team's strength (which is actually good coaching). 50/50, depends on how the season goes. The schedule is certainly doing him no favors. But if Boxerdog's first post comes true, he may get hired away.... LOL.

And remember... our 2011 team (good defense, average offense) finished ranked higher than our 2012 team (great offense, no defense).

Our passing game sucked last year and it led to teams being able to pressure us with much more than the down four. Often times, our qb's would have enough times to make plays early in games and they simply couldn't make them. When it becomes apparent that a team can't make routine passes/receptions, opponents can pin there ears to blow up the run. In my opinion, our qb's (and our wr's to an extent) made it virtually impossible to run any kind of scheme with any significant degree of success. I'm not saying there weren't deficiencies in the OL but, like I said, our qb's proved they couldn't make plays even when they had the time to do so.

I think it's fair to assume that the OL will be better this year. I also contend that we have an upgraded receiving corps. Undoubtedly, Higgins can't be worse than he was last season, he's got to improve with the extra year of experience. However, he has such a long ways to go to be a reliable qb. I think Sokol will come in and win the job quite easily. And I think our coaching staff knows it too.

Those are certainly 7 winnable games. For most coach's anyway. The question is, can HOLTZ do it?
