What does RNP mean? I am guessing that is not good.

Also, I am proud that tech is a national tier 1 university. that is amazing.....especially that we have held on to that status for a couple of years now.

Tier 2 = RNP (Rank Not Published) so the schools at the very bottom aren't embarrassed.

We are going on 3-4 consecutive years designated as a Tier 1 National University. I'll have to go back and check.

It's the bottom of Tier 1, but not last place. It's like being ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25. The team ranked No. 25 is not in last place because there are a bunch of schools behind them that aren't ranked. No. 25 is still in the Top 25. The RNP schools are like the "others receiving votes."

Considering our resources, the politics of Louisiana, and how far we've come, it's something we should be damn proud of. This ranking was earned by the hard work of the Tech faithful.

Different organizations have their own definitions of tiers. Just like there's an AP poll and a coaches poll. High school kids and their parents have no clue what those other organizations are, but they do know USN&WR. It's in every high school counselor's office, newspaper articles, and magazine shelves everywhere every year. Here's an explanation how USN&WR draws the line between the two tiers:

No, it's not last place. All those other schools with RNP means "rank not published." It's not the same as being unranked or not existing. That means they were ranked behind Tech, but they are in the bottom quartile or Tier 2. US News does not make those rankings public for the reasons explained on their FAQ page. Not only that, Tech is ranked No. 201 in the most prestigious category of a publication that ranks about 1,800 colleges. By my count, 268 national universities were ranked with 66 not being published, and then 12 were unranked. In no way was Tech ranked last.

And the answer is, yes.

Of which there are only 201 out of 1,800+ colleges in the country. With our location, size, and budget, I'd say that is one HECK of an achievement.
