Uhhh, more like steal the chart and never give it back. Those decisions are best made depending on the current situation rather than based on percentages compiled from who knows...........
Sokol's fumble was the game changer. I'm NOT blaming Sokol, he has not fumbled all year. It just happened at the worst possible moment in the frickin championship game!
The INT that sealed it was his fault as he misread MU's defense. They jumped into a zone at the snap of the ball. QBs are supposed to see things like that....he didn't.
I FULLY expect to see Sokol shine in our bowl game. He will bounce back.
You have to add in that lame ass "block in the back" penalty on the long kickoff return down to Marshall's 30 yard line. That sealed our fate, along with about a half dozen other incidences. We seemed to be on the short end of the stick way too many times. And another thing....why in the hell do you call a QB draw off left tackle on first down when you have a stable of running backs, on of whom has 150 yards rushing and 3 frickin' rushing TD's!! Sokol is not a running back, and it showed on that fumble.
NXT, the point is our mentality is and always seems to have been that NEXT year is our year. The bowl game and extra practice will give our guys time to gel. We will finally buy into the system. Or, (fill in the blank). There is always a reason that NEXT year is it. I am ready for them to get it done THIS year.
I'm sticking with: Sokol will shine in the bowl game.
If you want to point a finger and try to figure out what went wrong, then ------> Holtz
The offense did nothing in the 2nd half. The D tried to win the game for us. And, almost did. Special teams again let us down. Yeah, even on that big KO return a bogus call negated it. We did block a punt, kudos to the ST for that one. But, it's a long game and mostly we got smoked...again...in ST play.
Lousy offense...all on Holtz....cost us this game.
Marshall fans are saying the weather was likely the factor. It had to be something other than play-calling because the play-calling was ridiculous. Our strength has been passing the ball. We are not a good power-running team. Marshall is very good against the run. Yet we pretty much just abandoned the passing game and chose to run the ball every play in the 2nd half... and of course, we didn't move the ball.
Well not for me. THIS YEAR has been great! Exceeded expectations. West division champs when we were picked 4th. Guaranteed bowl game. None of this sitting around hoping we get an at large berth. Defense was a thing of beauty all year. As much as a lot of you guys complain about play calling, we put up a LOT of points this year. We had one baffling loss. It happens. If we play the championship game (wind/rain 5 starters missing on the road) we lose 7 of 10 times. That's reality. not saying you in particular, but so many people on this board are glass half empty people. I was unsure of CSH this year. Wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt last year, but last year was ugly. I believe I might be getting on the wagon. Does he make mistakes, sure, as does every coach. Some of people are such great armchair coaches You should be making millions coaching. Quit your day job and get with it.
For me, for this year. I'm proud of our players and coaches. Great jobs guys! Let's hope we can find a QB for next year. Until then I will enjoy watching whatever bowl game we are invited to.
Don't mistake high expectations for glass half empty. We've seen what this offense is capable of and yesterday was subpar. Personally, while I'm happy we made it to the championship game, it doesn't wash away the stinch from NSU, ODU, and the loss yesterday. In all 3 games our offense shat the bed in the 2nd half. Bicknell was ripped for not making adjustments; why should Holtz be immune?
You don't have to be a coach to expect better from Holtz. I complain when Brees throws into triple coverage and is intercepted. Could I do better than Brees? No. But that doesn't mean I can't expect better from him.
All 3 games were different though. Against NW state we had a few big plays brought back due to penalties in the 1st half. And then had 3 turnovers in the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead. Against ODU, we couldn't get their offense off the field and we only had the ball for 6 minutes in the 2nd half. I think the elements played a role in the Marshall game, but I could be wrong... maybe we just wanted to force their offense to win it instead of giving them a cheap score with a turnover. We may never know, hopefully someone will ask what the plan was in this game.
But overall, Tech ranked very high in 3rd quarter scoring margin, which is a sign of good adjustments being made. The 3rd quarter was our best quarter this year.
I agree with all that T1. No doubt we were playing conservative. And I'm not saying it was all on Holtz. It ultimately comes down to player execution and Sokol was definitely affected by the wet ball. But when your offense is struggling, it's on the coach to make an adjustment. In the 3 losses mentioned, we didn't seem to make any adjustments, for good or bad. Yesterday was different considering weather, but Marshall had to play in the same conditions and they managed to complete passes and move the chains in the second half while we couldn't.
