30 yard play action pass to Henderson. Great throw and catch.

Great throw here really? This one was all on the receiver who played center field AND defense on the play.

Also, on the first series of the game...what should have been a TD catch by #3 was not a good throw. QB not under pressure and not a good pass. #3 still should have caught it, but it should have been in the gut.

Two drops by two of my favorite players.

Lost in this is that the 30-yard catch was by #4 Griffin, not #1 Henderson.

Don't trust the play-by-play, because they didn't give Marshall a 1st down like the officials did before Cato's last play fumble.

Yes, I knew that. I didn't see that T1 did not have it posted correctly.

Your information is not accurate. I specifically remember one series in the 3rd quarter that went something like this:

1st Down - Dixon run for 9 yards
2nd down - Craft run for 5 yards (made 1st down)
    1st down - Incomplete pass
2nd down - Failed Trick Play (End around)
    3rd down - Incomplete pass
    4th down - Punt

Why pass in this situation? I commented on it at the time on this very thread. Stooooopid play calling.

Obviously weather was the biggest issue, and Sokol couldn't throw well. Neither were Holtz's fault. But when we passed, we were doing 5 and 7 step dropbacks. I don't recall seeing any 3 step quick slants or quick outs, WR screens, swing pass to RBs, etc. That's where I think Holtz didn't do his part. As I've already stated, ultimately it comes down to player execution. But I don't think Holtz helped our struggling QB with his playcalling. It felt like last season.
I agree with you. Holtz didn't put his players in the position to win in the 2nd half yesterday.

T1, above is what I posted in post #408 yesterday. This series of plays doesn't appear in your 2nd half play chart at all.

What you see above is stoopid play calling. I rest my case.

    Play 1: 9 yard run
    Play 2: 5 yard run
    Play 3: Incompletion
    Play 4: Incompletion
    Play 5: End around

We only had 2 drives over 3 plays in the 2nd half....

5 plays, 10 yards ending with a punt
6 plays 35 yards ending with a missed FG

This would have to be the one you are thinking of:
    1st 10: 6 yard run
    2nd 4: False start
    2nd 9: 5 yard run
3rd 4: Incomplete to Taylor on a 5 yard out.
    4th 4: Punt

This is the drive with the end around:
    1st 10: 3 yard run by Sokol
2nd 7: Play action with immediate pressure, overthrow to Dixon in flat
3rd 7: End around to Henderson for 4 yards
4th 3: Tried to draw them offsides but it didn't work, so timeout and punt.

Nope. You got it all wrong. As usual. Your drive chart is screwed up.

You're right, that drive is on the ESPN site. I think I fast-forwarded through the commercials too much. I didn't chart those 1st 2 plays.

1st and 10 at LT 34 Kenneth Dixon run for 9 yds to the LaTch 43 17 16
2nd and 1 at LT 43 Kenneth Dixon run for 3 yds to the LaTch 46 for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at LT 46 Cody Sokol pass incomplete
2nd and 10 at LT 46 Carlos Henderson run for a loss of 2 yards to the LaTch 44
3rd and 12 at LT 44 Cody Sokol pass incomplete
4th and 12 at LT 44 Logan McPherson punt for 27 yds, punt out-of-bounds at the Marsh 29

    So our runs were: 4, 3, 5, 1, 9, 3, -2, 3, 4, 19, fumble, 6, 5, 0, 5, 3, -4

The 2 incompletions were both good coverage by Marshall. The first one was a play-action bomb to Henderson that Henderson almost made a play on, but couldn't. The 2nd one was the 15 yard pass to Taylor on 3rd and 12 that the Marshall DB tipped away at the last second. I don't see why you would run the ball on 3rd and 12???

Bottom line is that if you re-watch the 2nd half you will have to give credit to Marshall's defense. We couldn't run or pass on them.

It was all Holtz's fault. He calls the plays.

Pick up the yards and the play-calling is fine. Dixon's 99 yard run against ULL was a great play-call. If he gets stuffed for a safety it's a terrible call. Same call though. Executing the play is more important than the play that is called.

Coaches can call the play, but the players have to execute the play. When we play a crappy defense, we look good. When we play a good defense we don't look as good. The same plays are being called. It's tougher to execute against a more talented team. It's not rocket science.

Oh, well....then I guess we do need coaches. Only, those who know how to find weaknesses and exploit them. A talent lacking in our play-caller, obviously.
