Steve Olson is usually the weakest but had the more solid game I thought

He didn't have a great night. He missed a few also. They were all off last night but he was the best of the three. They missed several obvious out of bounds calls. They usually get a high percentage of those calls right.

Thanks for the reply, Dwayne. Those are the two I thought had a really bad game.

So this quote from the Isabella article in Monroe paper today (linked in another thread) explains the reason for the difference in the tickets:

"White checks some emails, plays back a few voicemails then pauses when he gets a calendar alert.

It's a reminder of Tech's game Saturday against Southern Miss from earlier in the year before it was changed to March 5."

He is the absolute worst ref we have ever had. His ego seems to overshadow his ability to get the calls right. I remember one call he missed that he went and looked at the replay, then mouthed to another official "See See I didn't miss the call." Like a petulant child he had to get his call right. The official he called over rolled his eyes as he walked away.

I understand it must be a tough job though. You're going to be jeered no matter how good you call it, and at this level I doubt they're getting paid a ton (some of you no doubt know).

"This" is the highest level of collegiate officiating. They are well-compensated.
    Have you considered those Dogs?

You would be shocked at how much these officials make per game, last time I was in a discussion with some bball staffers a couple of years ago and I could not believe it! It does differ some based on experience but they make in one game than most get in a 2 week pay period and close to monthly salary of a LA school teacher with years of experience.

Base is $750 but most make more. I read several years ago the average salary is $1200 plus per diem.

The bald ref, Kipp Kissinger, has already done 86 games so far this season. Mark Whitehead is another ref who frequently is assigned to Tech games and he has done 82 games. I suspect both of these long time refs earn higher than average salary.

My favorite ref, Steve Welmer, was once reported to earn $130,000 a year in salary calling college basketball. Steve Welmer was the 6' 8" old ref with the hair loss in the middle. He was respected by coaches and players because of his great personality and his ability to get it right. We got him a lot because his wife was a Northwest Airline official and he would fly into Monroe on Northwest and rent a car to get to Ruston. He flew free so he got to pocket most of his travel money. He was probably making $200,000 a year. The night after being Ruston you might see him calling a game in Minnesota. He suffered a career ending injury in the 2010-2011 season.

As I've posted before, these refs have a tough travel schedule. Some take very few days off during the season. I think the game is hurt by this as we get closer to the end of the season. I'm for a mandatory rest period for refs during the season.

Here's a link to a more recent story stating this - "The going rate for top-tier college basketball refs ranges from $1,000 to $2,500, plus travel and food expenses. The Post-Standard put the fee at as much as $3,000 for a Big East or Atlantic Coast Conference game."

What was really funny was the next day I went back and watched some footage of the telecast and the first thing out of the announcers mouth about the officials were how this was "a seasoned veteran crew with multiple conference championship games and NCAA tournament games under their belt." He probably failed to mention they were the 1st round games and possible SWAC/Sunbelt games. Couldn't believe this crew was getting that kind of credit.
