ODU has gotten a lot of mileage out of that unexpected win over us last year. The way ODU fans talk about it on the CUSA board, you would think they had beaten Notre Dame and Alabama on the same Saturday.

I imagine it is the biggest win in their storied program.

I was replying to somebody that said it was a legal hit because I knew his head didn't hit the ground. It turns out it was an illegal helmet to helmet hit that should have been called and the Rice player should have been ejected.

It's only a "targeting" or "helmet to helmet" penalty if the receiver is "defenseless" while in the process of making the catch. Carlos had already caught the ball and was running through the defense and was not considered "defenseless" so it was a perfectly legal hit. Similar to a running back getting smoked by a linebacker after running through the line.

Any helmet to helmet hit is illegal as well as any hit to the head, whether it's the helmet or forearm or a fist. The rule is to protect players from head injuries.

Whichever way they saw it, a penalty should have been called on the play. At a minimum it was helmet to helmet. I can't remember what game I watched this weekend and the player was ejected for something way less than this hit.

A Texas Tech player was ejected when his facemask went into an OSU player. The review clearly showed it and the rule states otherwise...they still ejected him.

Yeah, that was WKU instead of Marshall that donkey stomped ODU.

Yep. We still do not match up well with WKU. Just dont want another offensive show down - though it might be close again, we tend to fizzle out around 40 pts while WKU stops scoring when the clock stops ticking. If I thought we could rush for 200-250 yds we could shorten the game but running the ball hasnt been our strength. I would rather play Marshall. However, first things first, we got to win out.

He was trying to kill him. ..not tackle him. I thought it was a cheap shot.

Tech defense make the same "tackle" every play. Y'all really are trying to find something where there is nothing.

I am still convinced that if I was the ref at the time that I would not have thrown a flag on that hit. Sitting in the stands at the game and watching it happen the thought of it being a penalty never crossed my mind.

If you are a defensive player and you are not willing to slobber-knock an opponent in the exact same way then join the debate team and vote for Hillary.

Unfortunately, too many defenders try to make tackles by delivering crushing hits like the one on Carlos, but fail. Then we get to scream at them for not wrapping up on tackles. The Rice defender would have been more likely to LEAD with his helmet if he had attempted to wrap up on the tackle. I see him leading with his shoulder to Carlos' chest / shoulder and following through with his arm. In that collision there was helmet-to-helmet contact. I still do not think it gets a flag.

All this talk. Someone post a replay. I remember that Henderson had all the momentum and slammed into the DB. If the DB at the same time was moving and led with his helmet I don't remember it. The DB staggered around a bit after the hit, also. I would like to see it again before I made a judgement.
