Cruz says they wouldn't be eligible for re-entry because they are criminals (broke US immigration laws). Yes, that does make him tougher on illegal immigration than Trump.
It also secured the fact that his plan will never work. Self-deportation is the only realistic way that we'll get rid of any illegals who are otherwise law-abiding. Under the Cruz system, they'll stay off the grid.
It's a great sound byte, but unworkable.
Isn't that what e-verify would do? If companies cannot hire illegals, they will have to self-deport.

TED CRUZ: We have a deportation force, it is called border patrol and immigration/customs enforcement. Border patrol is at the border, ICE is at the interior, they are both law enforcement.

I think Trump's the one who wants to round them up and ship them out in a day or two. Cruz wants to self-deport and deport when caught... slow, but steady. Trump will let them come back in, Cruz won't.
