I said they embarrass us, not own us.
DC Baker does not appear to be going anywhere. Move along and stop complaining.

Stop complaining? hah!
But, yeah, based on that article Baker is still here. Of course, when he wasn't fired the day after the bowl, I knew Baker would be back. Holtz would have released Baker back then, giving him time to hire a new DC and also being fair to Baker giving him more time to find another job.
We suck on defense. GLM47 posted the stats. They are awful! Holtz can try to sugarcoat it by picking out one stat, the sacks, and point to it as a reason to be hopeful. Total BS! We got 44 sacks because other teams were dropping back and throwing so much against our crappy secondary. Gave us more opportunities for sacks. And, with Ferguson and Canty, and others, we did have some good pass-rushers. But that same front 7 was woeful against the run...when it mattered. Gave up waaaaay too many 4-yard runs on 3rd and 3. Couldn't stuff the run when it counted.
I am encouraged that Holtz is focusing on defense, in recruiting. Shows he is aware we sucked on defense. Maybe we'll see a good defense in 2017. Let's achieve mediocrity at least!!
It appears Coach Baker may have been too green to be a DC at this point in his career. He obviously had better talent in 2015 as compared to 2016. I expect we will see a step change improvement in our 2017 defense. If not, COYHCSH needs to make a move.
Ryan Higgins was a better QB as a senior than he was as a freshman. Coach Baker will be a better DC in year 3 than in year 1 or year 2. He knows the defense sucked. I guarantee he is working to get better.
So suck it up, snowflakes. Signing day is right around the corner!
So, in the world according to Clyde.....anybody that gives us a bottom 10% performance vs their peers nationally remains safe at LA Tech and can expect to enjoy the luxury of "on the job training".
Here are some 2016 stats from the NCAA site:
3rd down conversion % defense - ranked 114 out of 128
Passing yards per game defense - ranked 116 out of 128
Red zone defense - ranked 112 out of 128
Scoring defense - ranked 97 out of 128
Passing efficiency defense - ranked 117 out of 128

You can deflect all day long but facts are facts.
All of those defensive stats look depressing. How did we win nine games? Were all of our wins against teams that ranked lower than us in those defensive stats? Really asking. Nine teams had worst defenses than us. Maybe not against everyone else but against us they stunk. See North Texas and UTSA especially. You don't win games on overall stats, but who has the best stats on the day you play. That's sort of a paraphrase of a quote by HCSH's father. You don't have to be the best team in the country - just the best team on the field that day.
What I'm saying is that when we put 50+ points and 500 yds on a team we boast that it's because we're so good not because of poor defense by the other team. Our offense this year made a lot of teams' defenses look like #128.
Who replaced Vernon Butler, Adarrius Barnes and Kentrell Brice? Will their replacements play in the NFL? It's the old Jimmies and Joes vs X's and O's. The coach can install a thousand schemes, if the players don't execute.....Is Baker the same caliber DC as Diaz? No, but we don't pay our assistants top dollar either. Arranda is making @ 1.8 million / yr. Our HC doesn't even come close to making that.
You say that two of our losses were caused by bad defense. How much did those two games contribute to those overall stats? What would have been our per game stats and rankings without them. Just guessing, but probably not much different.
The best stat is that our defense held nine teams to fewer points than our offense scored. We could have won all 14 games and had awful defensive stats so long as they held the other team to fewer points than us.
That being said, we do need to improve.
