I bet Miss State bulldog will be at the Joe. Can we borrow him?
The handler of Tech was connected to SGA but I don't remember well how. I'm sure the person was appointed to take of the dog during games and events and in charge of the account. I remember the dog having its own university ID so water could be bought from the account for the dog. That's if I remember correctly.
I also want to know who particularly owns Tech XXI? From the news release, it was transferred to someone in central Louisiana. Did they get a "free" pure bred dog? Why them? Are they Tech grads? I wish I could put my name down to own a retired mascot. I would pay good money for one.
Ownership and care of Tech XXI will be transferred to a veterinary family located in central Louisiana, where he will live out his retirement as a family pet. The decision to and process for replacing Tech XXI as a university mascot will be discussed by Louisiana Tech officials to ensure complete compliance with USDA regulations for service animals.
Most mascots are not cared for/kept by the university, most people in Louisiana think of lsu and Mike but that is a one-off as most schools won't/don't/can't pay for habitat and upkeep. Instead they have an official student organization that does it, raises money for the mascot and is responsible for the animal (usually in conjunction with a vet or the vet school). Hell, Colorado's Ralphie is taken care of by student volunteers, a full grown bison! The issue at Tech is their isn't an official group, we usually have a family that takes care of him and he gets dropped off to the cheerleaders during game days and they pick him back up at the end. Family is out of town then he stays at the vet, or if they move they take him with them (that happened in the past and we had to get a new Tech).
To further this discussion I had proposed a few years ago that we should have 5 handlers (rotate among a larger organization) dressed in 1900's college attire representing the students saved and be able to tell the legend of the bulldog. They could even relate it to the old fire bell (do we still have that?) in the Joe and that we ring it in honor of the dogs sacrifice and to summon his courage running into the fire.

That would be awesome. Too bad it's too good of an idea.
Someone from SGA responded to me on FB. Their excuse is that "we have a few volunteers willing to house him, but we will still have to pick among them and then have the home inspected." Why not let the original family take care of the next bulldog? They've been through the "inspection" already, unless they moved and took the mascot with them. They didn't go into great detail about the last mascot.
LATech SGAGreat question ! The biggest holdup is that our live mascot lives with volunteers, whereas LSU's mascot lives in a consistent set-up. ALL live mascots in the US are actually monitored by the USDA, so the USDA has to send a representative to Ruston to inspect the home that we pick for Tech XXII to live in. We have a few volunteers willing to house him, but we will still have to pick among them and then have the home inspected. We want a live mascot as much as you do, there is just unfortunately a lot of red tape! Keep sending us questions when you have them!
This is how you retire a bulldog. You have a one waiting in line.
