CBS is borrowing a page from NBC's playbook and is showing the event "plausibly live". The bad weather chance explains it since CBS usually doesn't operate this way.

The "plausibly live" TV tactic allows a network to fit in maximum commercial time without missing any important action. NBC uses this on almost all of its Wimbledon tennis coverage except for the men's and women's finals. Unfortunately viewers are basically unaware of this blatant media manipulation.

I first caught on to NBC because of what they did during the Atlanta Olympics. Almost none (I think only around 10 hours) of those events were actually shown live as they happened. I first noticed when I watched some of the swimming finals live on CBC using a satellite dish, while NBC was still running athlete profiles. About the time the race ended live, NBC would be ready to show the start.

the absolute worst was the sydney olympics. granted they are @18 hours ahead of us but NBC's coverage was horrible. Why not just show the events live, instead of delaying them 18 hours. For example the opening ceremonies were 8pm friday night sydney time, but NBC showed them at 8pm friday night eastern time. I constantly knew the results 18 hours before nbc showed them to me, or tried to as I already knew the stories from the internet. Most other countries receive a coverage feed and show events live. NBC only shows american athletes winning gold/every gymnastics/basketball/other sports we're SUPPOSED to win and ignore the rest. we really don't get to see what the olympics are all about.
