Consumer confidence IS down. That said, all the economic indicators are strong. The economy and the market are acting in opposite directions for the past quarter. It's impossible to know what the market will do, but the economy is strong...even that conservative bastion NPR says so.

I think the markets are spooked based on the long bull market run (8+ years). Valuations had gotten high and investors see economic growth slowing plus other risks with trade wars. A recession is also inevitable. No one wants to be holding so much overvalued stock when that happens. This correction, if it holds and doesn’t get too much of a dead cat bounce, is much better for the long term health of the financial market, IMO. I am buying value on the dips and hoping for another even better opportunity soon.

"Dead Cat Bounce" is also, by the way, the new dance craze that all the cool kids are doing these days.

Sure. In fact, a 20% drop happens, on average, every 6 years. That means a 35 year old investor will see 10 of them over his investing "life time". These times of volatility are great for young investors. Well positioned older investors should be able to weather these short periods of tumult.

Besides the bias of the author (it IS an opinion piece), I thought this was a good read. If Trump is going to have somebody whispering in his ear, I can think of a bunch of folks worse than Rand Paul.

December job numbers were good....312,000 jobs created. But, how many of those were strictly seasonal? Many businesses hire temps during the busy Christmas shopping season. Still, the expected number was 275,000 and this trumps anything obummer ever did.

Consumer confidence was up....but has rolled back some, now that Pelosi was elected Speaker. Could see that train wreck coming. Still, Americans are a resilient lot, and tend to go about our business, regardless of the idiocy in DC. And, one must remember!!! gridlock is a great thing. For the next two years the 'craps will beat their heads against the wall, or "the wall" (get it?) The GOP controlled Senate, and Trump with his veto pen, will simply not allow anything coming out of the House to become law. The 'craps and the lamestream media, and their dizzy supporters, will cast this as a crisis. But...who cares?

Caveat: IF (huge IF) the wimpy GOP sticks to its guns. But, they, especially Mitch McConnell, will cave on some matters.

Anyway, if NOTHING new comes out of DC for the next two years, AMERICA and AMERICANS will do just fine, thank you.

But Trump has painted himself into a corner and the Republicans WILL leave him in droves as he he sulks and rebels against his new loss of control.

“Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia, because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan. Russia. … The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there. The problem is, it was a tough fight. And literally they went bankrupt; they went into being called Russia again, as opposed to the Soviet Union. You know, a lot of these places you’re reading about now are no longer part of Russia, because of Afghanistan.”

    Just wow

The stock market and consumer confidence are based on future outlook. And Americans see a downturn looming.

Politicians act like they have a far greater impact on the market than they actually do. The left and the right are bought and sold by big corporations, so it's not like transnational corporations have strong preferences for one party or the other.
