Several years ago I would occasionally see people walking down the street wearing a mask. Did I shive a git then? No. Must've been following his/her doctor's guidelines.
What Texas did was about the most common sense move there is. We're not policing you, but you have feel like you need to wear a mask, go for it.
Difference is that masks, in the Covid context, are to protect others. When everyone is wearing masks, COVID transmission goes down. Fewer people get sick, fewer people are hospitalized, fewer people die. Wearing a mask is a little inconvenient, but it saves lives, saves the state money, and allows businesses to open without threat of another outbreak that might shut them down. That is common sense.

    Re: Covid - 19

I work with a young fellow, he's about 30ish, who is ultra paranoid on all of this China virus stuff. He wears two masks and goes bonkers if someone approaches him unmasked. The other day, when he was again late for work, I was out doing all the work, opening the place up for business. There was literally no one else around, just me, so my mask was stuffed in my pocket. He had finally arrived and now hurrying to chip in to perform the morning tasks, we bumped into each other in a building. I was surprised to see him, to see anyone actually, and before I could even react, say a word, he is screaming at me "Where's your mask!? Put on a mask!" as he backed away.

As all was calm again, my mask on, I confronted him, "You little bastard," I began, "you're always late to work, I am always left to do your part, and when I am by myself, especially outside in the open air, no, I do not wear a mask." I lectured him on responsibility, as in being to work on time, but he just brushed it off as that being some "boomer thingy."

    And this...

two of the most RIDICULOUSLY scared people I personally know, the MOST stringent mask-wearers, social-distancers...I mean militantly! Big time democraps too, even had a Biden-Harris sign in their front yard! Egad! Well, they both just recovered from a bout with the China Virus. Both in their 50's. Neither have gotten the vaccine since heretofore they have not been in a priority group, but also because "it is a Trump drug" and they don't trust it, but now that Biden has been prez for awhile then maybe the vaccine produced recently is good. But, still, they are afraid to go to a place with all those other people to get vaccinated. She called me yesterday, as I have been an advisor for their nursery business (green plants, not kids) and said they had both fully recovered from the virus episode. It's amazing that two people like those, who have been the very epitome of caution all this time, got the virus, while the party animals down the street never did, or if they did, never knew it.

Mask wearing only protects you so much when others aren’t also wearing masks.

Btw, vaccine hesitancy is higher with Republicans than Dems.

In an average of Axios/Ipsos polls taken in January and February, 74% of Democrats said they'd either been vaccinated, or were extremely or very likely to get vaccinated as soon it's available to them. Just 51% of Republicans said the same thing. Independents were in the middle of these two groups at 61%.

When Gallup asked respondents whether they would agree to get vaccinated if the vaccine were available to them right now, the partisan gap stood at 40 points (91% for Democrats and 51% for Republicans) in their most recent poll.

Btw, part II, Texas’s rescission of the mask mandate also comes at a time when Texas’s vaccination rate is bottom 5 in the country and the state still hasn’t progressed beyond groups 1a and 1b. One of the few states where teachers still can’t get vaccinated.

Tennessee NEVER had a statewide mask mandate. You don't want to come here.

Correct! The allergies don't affect me when I wear a mask while mowing.

    Nevermind.

Gives you less protection against Covid if others aren’t also wearing masks.

I wear a mask...most of the time. In fact, I can't recall the last time I went out in the public without one. I put one on when going into any store or other public place. Don't like it, but I do it. I would guess that around here wearing a mask while in public tops 90%. It's at the point you notice it when someone is not wearing a mask. It stands out now.

He still says we need to wear masks. He has said that since we had evidence of substantial community spread, that it is spread mostly through the air, and that people that are a/pre-symptomatic are spreaders.

“It’s official: Greg Abbott is a moron.”

Pretty sure they are quoting me.

Don’t know why the Republican Party is deciding to double down on being the “party of dumb.” It isn’t a winning formula for them.

You should be happy that the epic over reaction is winding down, but it hurts when you people lose control right? Just remember that because of the China Virus you people were able to steal an election and begin your crusade to kill jobs and open the borders

Speaking of "brain dead" as mentioned in that article, how about everyone THINK for themselves. You are still free to wear as many masks as you want. Side note: I still find it curious that banks require you to wear a mask to enter their "secured" buildings. Bet Bonnie & Clyde are thinking (or would be if they could), dang! wish we'd could enter a bank wearing a mask and not draw attention!

Back to the point. Ya know, motorcycles are dangerous and even more so when there are no helmet laws. But, just because the law allows it doesn't compel you to dash out and buy a bike and then ride w/o a helmet. You have choices! Ditto with lifting all those China virus mandates. As an individual you can make choices. Like load up on PPEs and stay away from public places if you deem them too risky. Stop being a frickin' helpless baby.

The mask mandate is to protect others from the one wearing the mask. It is like laws that keep you from firing off your gun randomly in the city. That law isn’t to protect you - it is to protect others from you.
