It wasn’t always like this. I think TV/internet may have affected attendance? Tech used to NEVER be on TV. The only way you saw a game was at the stadium.
    Winning teams pack stadiums.

The issues have been rehashed many times.

We are not in a great area with tons of free cash flow motivated individuals. Therefore: gameday must be accessible and fun, the game itself must be fun (including demonstration of mastery, not bumbling around), and the team must have a "winning tradition," (though of course not every game can be won) instead of loser tradition.

    I'll hang up and listen.
Just remember, YOU ASKED for this:

    First:

    - 8 of LA Tech's 41 CUSA wins were over a hapless UTEP program, that everyone in CUSA doesn't get the benefit of playing. UTEP has a record of 23-70, from the time Tech joined CUSA in 2013, thru the 2020 season. That's a .2473 winning percentage over the last 8 years.

    - 6 more of LA Tech's 41 CUSA wins were over an almost equally hapless Rice program that everyone in CUSA doesn't get the benefit of playing. Rice has a record of 34-61, from the time Tech joined CUSA in 2013, thru the 2020 season. That's a .3579 winning percentage over the last 8 years.

    - 6 more of LA Tech's 41 CUSA wins were over a UTSA program on the rise, but clearly not developed yet. UTSA has a record of 40-56, from the time Tech joined CUSA in 2013 thru the 2020 season. That's a .4167 winning percentage over the last 8 years.

So, that's a total of 20 of Skip's 41 CUSA wins coming from these specific, mostly horrible, football programs at UTEP, Rice & UTSA. Essentially HALF of Skip's CUSA wins are over the 3 perennial losers.

When people want to know why Skip hasn't left LA Tech yet, THIS is the answer! As long as Skip is at Tech, he's know's he's got guaranteed wins (in most years) from these 3 loser programs and an annual FCS game, already banked. He only has to coach two more wins each season against peer programs like UNT or USM, and he's automatically bowl eligible. It's the easiest job in FBS football, and Skip knows it.

    I'll hang up and listen.

Ouch! Then a few of our wins are against East teams with losing records too, I’m sure.

I think Tech has a good reputation as a winning program. Games aren’t a lot of fun for the casual fans though.

Good point. You are right. Too bad all the other C-USA teams don't get the benefit of playing bad conference teams like UTEP, Rice, UTSA, Old Dominion, Charlotte, and the F_U twins. All the other CUSA teams only play 8 games each season against the one team that goes on to with the conference championship. Even without the 20 wins you decided to arbitrarily throw out, we would still have a winning record in conference, which only 5 other CUSA teams can say (and that is before we arbitrarily throw out their wins against the three worst teams they faced over that period).

since 2013 Overall Overall CUSA CUSA
    W L W L
    Marshall 70 36 42 20
    LA Tech 63 43 42 21
    WKU 55 39 35 20
    UAB 45 33 29 17
    MTSU 52 51 38 26
    FAU 49 52 33 29

    Rice 35 62 24 37
    Charlotte 24 47 16 29
    UTEP 26 71 12 48

(the Tech fight song grows louder and louder until I'm drowned out and the hosts break for commercial, giving me no choice but to hang up and listen)

You’re right, Skip has gotten fat winning against horrible teams. All the while never winning a championship in the worst conference in the FBS. Perhaps no coach in America has benefited more from playing in a terrible conference. Prior to this season, since Skip arrived at Tech from USF, we have played football 56 times against teams that finished their seasons with .500 or below records or who were FCS teams. For sake of simplicity, we will call those “bad football teams”. Conversely, we have played 46 times against teams that finished above 500, we will likewise call those “good football teams”.

    Skip’s record against such teams:

“Bad football teams” 47-9 .839 winning percentage

“Good football teams” 14-32 .304 winning percentage

So as anyone can easily understand Skip’s record is a direct result of playing a garbage schedule year after year. It isn’t so much that Skip is some great coach, he annually plays one of the easiest schedules in the country.

But do not take my word on the matter, take USF’s, they fired him. Fired him for the horrible job he did there. Only took them three years to figure out he was hot garbage.

Better yet take Lou’s word on the matter. Lou demoted Skip as his offensive coordinator at South Carolina. Think about it, we hired a guy whose own father did not have confidence in him.

OMG, can you even imagine Skip Holtz being an OC anywhere, much less in the SEC?

It’s a lot to ask, but do you know how Bicknell, Dooley, and Dykes faired against “good” and “bad” teams?

    I got Dykes:

    Bad teams: 19-0 (1.000)
    Good teams: 3-15 (.167)

You got me. In all honesty I do not. I know they all competed in what was perceived to be a much better conference than what Skip enjoys. And Dykes won a championship in that better conference. As did Bicknell, who was fired.

Bicknell beat #18 SEC champion Alabama, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, #17 Fresno State and #23 Fresno State.

Dykes beat Ole Miss, Illinois, and Virginia.

All these wins were during the regular season. That’s six Power 5 wins and three Top 25 wins all during the regular season. When Skip does either of those, it will be for the first time in his tenure here.

    Dooley

    Bad teams: 16-1 (.941)
    Good teams: 1-19 (.050)

Bicknell is probably about the same.

Tech dominates bad teams but can’t get over that hump of beating good teams more consistently.

Skip’s 30% winning percentage over good teams is a step in the right direction, but he loses to the bad teams too much.

Man, we need to be better, but we do have a winning team in recent yrs and certainly a winning tradition. Far from perfect, but meeting your criteria.

That would be great (15 more wins) so we could complain about not being able to keep a HC

I would be okay with us being a stepping stone that kept a coach 3-4 years. If we kept the same offense like so many other schools find a way to do a new coach would be less of a big deal. If we developed that reputation, we could build in better buyouts so we can better afford the next guy.
