I like the idea, especially if we could give it if they attend the WHOLE game. A take on that is extra points on their food card at the end of each month or some other prize that is assured and not just a chance to win. Of course A&M also has (or used to have) mandatory cheer practice for freshmen. Not sure if they still do that, but it got the students highly involved.
Both something assured and a chance to win could be implemented. They could have it that students could hit levels. You get a point for being at the beginning and end of a match. Different levels of points get different rewards. It could be something simple like first level is free Tech school supplies such as folders and binders, second level could be Tech t-shirts, third level could be money on food card, fourth level could be better Tech clothes like coats or jerseys, fifth level could be Amazon gift cards. Finally at the end of each quarter, there could be a raffle for all participants from level 2 and up for example. Winner gets two VIP tickets to a game. The winner and a friend get to be in the presidential suite with the president for a football or baseball game or they get to travel with a team to an away game free of charge. They could do this for every quarter.
Culture is like a river flowing over time, bit by bit, sediment falls out, a bank caves in and the river flow splits, and decades later, there is a new island, and an altered course.
Then, there is the wisdom of man industriously determining means of controlling that "old" river which leads to the detriment of the nearby lowlands.
If I lost you, it is a metaphor. I am saddened to see young aspiring students setting foot on the peaceful alma mater that pulls at my heart with the most meaningful days of my life.
I hope they might understand and realize the wonder of the transformation that could take place if they just invest themselves in belonging there under the pines and magnolias. Memories that could be carved out in socializing in the dorm "TV' room and campus activities, and possibly meeting the love of your life in (lower) Toliver.
Another part of that experience was to see a significant change in the general student population's enthusiasm for "boosting" the Dawgs which began to grow as two, yes two loud-mouthed students began to take the "pep" rally over yelling out new and colorful cheers. It was a delight to sit in the student section of the old stadium (Northeast end) seeing the growth of interest in students with hand made props such as a large poster paper "Dawg food" can, cheering them on and noticing the player's acknowledgement.
Then, there was the pilgrimage to the State Fair weekend and THE GAME in the old "State Fair" stadium. (I remember one game -maybe 1964, when the student section had to be partially relocated because of a shift in the concrete (parting as if the student section was sinking - We bragged about it being because of the mass of our crowd).
Could go on for hours, but I gotta stop.
Summary? Hey Tech Student, you are blessed to be a part of a promising life that gets a big boost .... if you take the time to be thankful for a great experience that can hold very special memories just a few short years later. And they are lasting - mine - 56 years to this date.
Don't miss out.
I made a similar suggestion to the athletic department about 5 years ago. Scan student ID at all sporting events. Have a drawing for a legit prize during the final timeout of the game. At the end of the year, have a drawing for a huge prize. Number of games you get scanned in for gets you that many entries to win the big prize. They told me it wasn’t feasible
I don’t understand why it’s so difficult. Lincoln Builders, Genesis Energy, Marbury Company, Origin Bank, Century Next Bank, and Ruston Brick could all sponsor one $250 giveaway per home football game. Another $250 from each could be an opportunity for a student to win $1500 at the end of the season. Have Log Cabin, Portico, Dawg House, Beau Vine, Rotolo’s, Trenton Dental, Hood Petroleum, and any number of business in Monroe or Shreveport sponsor $25-$50 giveaways at basketball, baseball, softball, or soccer games. Maybe there is some legality there that is never explained when people like us repeatedly go to the athletic department with these ideas?
Which we now have. Seemed to go pretty smoothly on Saturday. Only thing that would be a nice bonus is have the local breweries (I guess just Utility) do a gameday beer only available at the Joe. If y'all remember at the Peach Fest this year, Flying Tiger brought over a Peach (Shandy? Whit? can't quite remember) just for that day ONLY, huge hit. Something like that.
This would require someone at Tech to do something that’s maybe a bit out of alignment with their job description. Remember that in todays world everyone is expecting to do less for more. Nobody in academia really cares. It’s probably that to the largest degree unless you grew up playing sports you can’t appreciate what it is to support a sport.
