Baseball Bulldogs Drop Midweek Home Contest to Warhawks

A new article has been posted on www.latechsports.com:

In the second of two midseason matchups with the ULM Warhawks, Louisiana Tech could not overcome a big fifth inning showing from the visitors and, despite a timely Ethan Bates grand slam late in the game, fell 8-5 on Wednesday night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

ULM is now 13-20 after beating Tech twice this season. Since 2005 ULM hasn’t beat Tech 2 times consecutively in a season. Those were the bad years under Simoneaux during which time he had 4 winning seasons in 12 years. What that means is that Tech is revisiting a new low point under Burroughs, Gaspard & Fouts. After the game Burroughs went on record saying the team won’t be this bad next year.

Here’s an idea, how about giving the season ticket holders next year’s tickets for free since we invested in the highly talented team Burroughs said we were going to have that he hasn’t managed to put on the field.

Let him have his bad year. Let’s just finish this thing out “trying” to win and look forward to next year! I think this is a big learning year for Coach Burroughs. If we suck again next year we will know it’s time. We would be crazy to fire this man just because of this year. Sometimes we have to deal with a crap team in order to bounce back.

We aren’t a powerhouse like we want to be. We have been spoiled with two regional appearances. Lane joins us in saying things are unacceptable. Can he save the team? We will see but he deserves the chance.

The lack of interest is already showing in the stands. LB knows he is at fault, but here's the deal...

He had a jewel to work with when he arrived. Goff left him enough talent to be a regional team in his first year. He blew it by making bad coaching decisions.

The tornado, playing at a high school facility (which he spends entirely too much time harping on), China Virus (which ended up helping the team), ect.

No excuse for not taking full advantage of the new stadium and two regionals in a row. NO EXCUSE! He has let Tech down and the baseball fans down. Nobody is saying "fire him", but we expect him to do his job on the field and in recruiting. He is not!

These coaches must not have recruited at all the last two years. How do you get this bad in this short of a time?

Apparently we have freshmen on the bench. I say let them play. What can it hurt?

It’s really hard to understand how our pitching is this bad. We apparently recruited some real duds.

I can agree that Tech doesn’t need to exactly start from scratch with a new head coach but Burroughs pretty much has to start from scratch with a new team in 2024 minus the freshmen that he hasn’t played this year. How’d you like to be a freshman on Tech’s team essentially sitting out a year letting your skills decline while you’re watching almost everybody on the field play poorly. If Burroughs is seriously serious about Tech being a better team and program then it has to begin with some new assistant coaches. Neither Gaspard or Fouts have even come close to proving that they can recruit capable players or coach them up. The team’s stats tell the story. Facts are facts and just to touch on the headliners; Matulia 25 hits & 33 strikeouts
    Drost 17 hits & 35 strikeouts
Safford 8 hits & 20 strikeouts… remember Burroughs agreed to Drost & Safford transferring to Tech from LSU. LSU didn’t bus them up here and drop them off. It’s obvious why they’re not at LSU, but they’re good enough for Tech, No Way! Do Better Tech!

I agree. We need to let the young guys get some serious playing time to evaluate what we have on the bench. We already know what we have starting, and it’s not good. This season is lost, might as well use the rest of the year to build for the future.

I am at a complete loss trying to figure out what motivated the LSU coaching staff to recruit Drost & Safford--even at the walk-on level.

So you are for firing him right now or after the season? I am pretty sure we cannot afford his buyout even if that was the right thing to do.

Bad decisions on the recruiting trail. As others have mentioned the extra year for the pandemic really helped us. The MLB reduced the number of minor league teams, dramatically reduced the number of players drafted, signed far fewer free agents from players not drafted, so all of our guys came back. Those facts made the last two teams much better than they otherwise would have been. The downside is this is now catching up to us. And now LB has an extended contract, we might even be able to afford his buyout if we wanted to fire him. Let’s hope he does a better job recruiting no more LSU guys just because they are from LSU, they must actually be good ballplayers.

Prime example of why NOT to extend a contract just because a coach does what they are getting paid to do. This is the crap that happens when academias call the shots instead of business minded leaders

*If* he's going to be fired there's not much point to waiting.

I'm not saying he should be, but this is a ludicrous collapse. From picked to win the conference to being swept by ulm? Come on.

But you're right, even if we had the political will to do anything, we can't afford to. The poor get poorer. I'm having a very hard time caring about any Tech sport right now when our loyalty has been rewarded with contempt for so long.
