My brother-in-law had a hip replacement, and it was day surgery and home that night. His wife is a recently-retired surgical nurse and she wanted to be present to watch the procedure and she said it was remarkable what they can do these days.

I have degenerative hip and a very bad right knee, and a not-so-good left knee too. Have only had arthroscopic surgery on my right knee, twice thus far, and now getting cortisone shots about every 5-6 months to be able to function. Doctor told me when I get tired of the shots he'll replace my banged-up right knee. My hip? Well, I don't know about that, although I am encouraged by recent developments. Hate to say this, but I don't like hospitals and try to stay away from them as much as possible...

    Glad yours went well.

    Re: peeve of the day

5 days out and I’m already walking the neighborhood 2 times daily. Zero pain pills since leaving hospital. I learned that I would have gone home same day except that I live 70 miles from that hospital and it also took me quite a while to get up and around after the spinal wore off. Apparently, a spinal can make your BP do some wonky stuff, and mine did. Hope you can have a replacement that will solve your issue. I already feel so much better. I’m no fan of hospitals either and doctor told me similar. “Come in when you can’t take it anymore.” For me, I got there quick.

Well, this is also true. But we have been in our house 6 years and have already replaced most of our smoke alarms 2 times and now some are crapping out again. It doesn’t help, I’m sure, that some I bought last years were stamped 2019 as date of manufacture.

It'd just change again. I don't think you can keep a living language static in either pronunciation or in spelling. In some ways it's a little validating that English speakers have always complained about this and always will (so long as some version is spoken). I mean, the fish = ghoti bit is from the 1850s? Imagine living through the great vowel switch era. For us now (born pre-internet) it's the textification of spelling/grammar. But our kids and grandkids will have their version. And it serves them right (just like previous generations deserve what we've been dealing with).

It's such a stupid language, but with apologies to Mr. Churchill, it's probably the worst one except for all the other ones.

You can't keep a living language static; that is true. However an organization can update spellings to reflect contemporary pronunciation. Many governments have organizations that do this. For English, it should be a descriptivist organization as much as possible. We want to avoid becoming the French Academy trying to create alternative French words for Anglicisms entering the language. It doesn't work. Let the language change and make alterations when needed.

There will be limitations and disagreements due to differences in pronunciation. Maybe English people want to change the word WATER to "wata" and Americans would want "wader" and that's just one example. I think we could find some agreements in general like "ough" words such as through, though, and tough becoming "thru", "tho" and "tuf" just for some easier examples. Eliminating silent letters and inconsistencies as much as possible.

Childhood education would really benefit immensely from this. Lots of time and effort are spent just getting students able to read and write due to incoherent spelling in English. This is time and effort that could be focused on math for example. This puts students at a disadvantage and makes teachers' jobs more difficult.

My dad said he an my uncle were in Spain (or somewhere) years ago and my uncle wouldn’t even stop to look at the exhibits, he’d just snap a picture and move on to the next one.

If you own a dog, please kennel and collar it. If it’s not in a kennel and has no collar, I won’t mind shooting it from my deer stand.
