Thank you, sir! This is exactly our goal, too. I'm giddy thinking about paying only $4000 for my daughter's first two years of college.

What was your experience on applying for scholarships after his two years at Collin?

It's not like I just showed up on a turnip truck.

It was Monroe advertising exec Garland Shell's boat -- The Smile America. (only houseboat sizeable on the Ouachita for those attending).
Jarrell, Davison, Shirley, Aillet, Green, Marbury, Hilburn (not exactly a millionaire). Shall I continue?

Historian is right on on his vouching.

The qualifications to be 1-A had just been determined by the NCAA and this is how Tech started its "separation" operation to achieve the requirements.

He actually got some scholarships at A&M his junior year.. He got married and was "on his own" his senior year so we (parents) were no longer part of FASTFA so he got grants, and scholarships due to his grades.. I joked that he should have gotten married the year before. He did research for NASA for his grad school at U of H which paid for his masters degree.

Despite all of this, I really feel bad for him. Here is a young man who did the right thing. He went to a prestigious university with a top program in Geology and graduated with honors. Then went on to U of H and graduated with his masters in 2021. He was delayed due to Covid, and any internships during when he should have gotten them were canceled due to Covid. His dream job is to work for NASA as that was his undergrad and grad research was related to. He has tried and applied several times and got down to the final two candidates but never given the job.

He looked at oil and gas, but the best job he could get was to be a mud logger on a rig working 20 on and 10 off, making $18.00 with a masters degree. He could make more as a cashier at Buccees and not travel.

He has applied for literally hundreds of jobs with zero success. He is now losing out to more recent grads with internships etc. He's thinking of getting his doctorate in geology, or going back for bachelors in engineering. My heart aches for the guy..

He still ended up here, but he graduated 2nd in his class and his GPA and ACT that would have gotten him a free ride at ULL only got him free tuition at Tech. He still had to take out loans to pay for room and board to attend Tech. My daughter graduates this year, she has gotten more mail from the University of Chicago and USM than Tech. My wife, son and I are all Tech grads and my kids grew up going to Tech events, so they know who and where we are. Seems like legacy students should be a major focus of our recruiting efforts.
There is an enrollment cliff coming around the 2026-27 school year. Tech needs to be doing everything we can to attract students and differentiate ourselves.

In California, some of the private universities (St. Mary’s, LMU) are already offering 50 to 75% tuition scholarships to any high school senior with a pulse, at least at the Catholic high schools. A coworker of mine found a $35k/yr scholarship offer letter from St. Mary’s on his daughter’s desk. He was excited and asked why she hadn’t mentioned it. Her response, “Dad, everybody in my class got that offer.”

Hate to hear that. Our society has created a system that punishes hard work and innate talent.

When considering the current status of Tech athletics (which includes attendance at games), it appears to me that we would be remiss to omit the impact of television is today's situation. The 2023 football season is a case in point. I am in my eighties and cannot attend games. Yet I can sit in the comfort of my recliner and watch every game. It is very difficult to sell anything that is being given away free. Now, this statement is not true at all colleges and universities. But is is at Tech. Will Tech ever come close to selling out the Joe again? Probably not as long as the medium of tv offers the games for free

Hi, can you please explain this a little further and why it's leading to massive scholarship offers?

Drop Out-of-State fees for Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. It can make a difference in a student choosing Southern Arkansas, Southern Mississippi, and others vs Louisiana Tech.

Increase advertising in those states. Get involved with community events in those areas and have information booths when you can.

Tech also needed season ticket and single game commitments to get past the minimum number of tickets sold at the time to achieve I-A status.

The cruise was used to get everyone together to lay out the plan and attempt to fund it.

The stadium expansion happened just before the 1988 season. The ticket push took several meetings into the 1988 season to ensure the requirements were met.

The NCAA called Reneau the afternoon of the football banquet in January, 1989 to tell him Tech had achieved the requirements and were going to be reclassified I-A in 1989. We were only the second school to move up at that point. Akron was the other.

Then Reneau announced it at the banquet that night.
Truth. I was there the night he announced it. Unfortunately, that was Reneau's high water mark in athletics. Firing Miller and hiring Stovall effectively reversed that initial accomplishment. If he could have just left well enough alone and gotten out of Miller's way he could have been celebrated as a great "athletics" president. But it was not to be.
