If I remember correctly the college board had a rule that the universities could not impose athletic fees on the students until it was changed about 4-5yrs ago. They agreed to allow schools to place an athletic fee proposal on a ballot and comply with the students wishes. It was on the ballot and voted down by our students. Cant just impose it unless rules are changed again.

Tech also needed season ticket and single game commitments to get past the minimum number of tickets sold at the time to achieve I-A status.

The cruise was used to get everyone together to lay out the plan and attempt to fund it.

The stadium expansion happened just before the 1988 season. The ticket push took several meetings into the 1988 season to ensure the requirements were met.

The NCAA called Reneau the afternoon of the football banquet in January, 1989 to tell him Tech had achieved the requirements and were going to be reclassified I-A in 1989. We were only the second school to move up at that point. Akron was the other.

Then Reneau announced it at the banquet that night.

Back then, I remember AD Paul Miller personally came to our Fraternity meeting on a Monday night to share the vision of moving up to 1-A and all that means and asked for our buy-in. I assume he spoke to other fraternities and other organizations across campus. I remember the excitement of the challenge to move up to 1-A and the talent level of players getting higher and higher even though tech was getting beaten by lopsided score vs big name schools, but there were victories along the way and a goal to achieve.

I don’t know the answer… does AD Wood go to organizations to personally promote athletes and lay out our goals? Would be worthwhile (if have meaningful goals that people can get excited about).

Wood only sees those on student council. They read through him, so he is ineffective.

NSU was the first thing I thought too. What’s it’s going to take to quit being their step up. Hopefully this guy can see the big picture and lead Tech with some backbone and balls. I’m sick of Tech being a get-along, go-along type of institution that gets door matted all the time. If Tech is ever going to be respected again and get something worth having they’re going to have to kick a lot of ass. Set some overachieving goals and hold people accountable. It’s true, nice guys finish last like Guice proved.

So he’s giving up his role over the entire UL System for Louisiana Tech?

He wants to be on a campus instead of in meetings in Baton Rouge. He enjoys meeting and working with students. I am a Northwestern fan and saw the good he did in a short time. I respectfully disagree with Dawg80. The students are going to know who their President is because they will see him everywhere on campus. He will be a big supporter of the athletic programs and will tirelessly promote Tech.

It is similar to what Dr. Savoie did in leaving the Board of Regents to be president of UL-Lafayette.

    Re: New President!!

All Jim Henderson did while at NSU was bad-mouth Tech, and well he also bad-mouthed other schools not named NSU or LSU. I was in a leadership meeting when he called other schools, like LSUS and others "diploma factories." In fact he said if you drove by LSUS slow enough with your window down they would toss a diploma into your car. Of course he was half-joking but considering the nature of that meeting it was petty and very unprofessional. He also told me directly that TMAC is awesome and of course Tech has to go to NSU to find quality people. He made promises to people he had no intention of keeping. And there was a host of other things...

When President Webb retired most folks, myself included, hated to see him go. Dr. Webb was a great president and a man of character. Henderson had done good things at BPCC and his hiring was met with optimism and hope that he would take NSU to the next level. None of the hope materialized as Henderson was just using NSU as a steppingstone to his dream job of chancellor at LSU. Things got worse at NSU and very quickly under Henderson. Some very good people, some with many, many years of loyal service to NSU were either let go or left on their own. The employees at NSU, from the staff to tenured professors, were thrilled to see Henderson leave for the ULS position.

Students love the new NSU president Dr. Marcus Jones, but he sucks as president. Jones is a personal friend, I "love" him dearly as a friend and know what he is capable of, and it is not as CEO of a university. So, what students think of a president is irrelevant to the important abilities of someone to lead a university. Dr. FJ Taylor is the only president I have known who could do both. Henderson is no FJ Taylor. I can't fathom why he wants the Tech job. It's not because he wants to elevate Tech so it has to be for selfish, personal reasons.

Is there someone I would recommend? Yep, Dr. William Wainwright, but Southeastern Louisiana University just hired him as their president. And yes, Wainwright got his undergrad degree from NSU too. But, he has already accomplished remarkable things as a college president, just look at Northshore Community College as an example.

Anyway, Henderson it is for Tech. Of course I HOPE he delivers for us. Has to be better than Guice, right? We'll see...

Wow! 5 text messages/emails already and more to come. I didn't realize my views of Henderson were so well-known! Got a text from a current NSU employee which says, "you see, Henderson doesn't hate Tech like you thought." And, not surprisingly, but a recently retired NSU employee emailed me calling Henderson a traitor! Why go to Tech, of all places!???

Surely there’s no way he can be worse than the two clowns we’ve had for the last 35 years.

I disagree that Dr. Reneau was a clown. He emphasized growth of the university where it matters most, in academics and in capital expenditures/growth of the physical plant. Guice did nothing but tread water his whole time and the world moved on leaving Tech behind.

And that is what I think Henderson will do too. Just got a text from someone who admittedly doesn't know for sure but is just speculating that Henderson wants more years of service toward his cushy retirement and he will just hang out in Ruston until his desired retirement date. Also, something someone told me several months ago is making more sense now.

When Henderson moved on to president of the ULS system he was smart enough to include in that contract agreement a stipulation that would allow him to choose any position he wanted within the ULS system, including as a professor, at the equal salary of the highest paid employee in that position. If he does become president at Tech, his salary will match whoever is the highest paid prez currently.

We all do! But then I wished Coach Crummy success too and that hasn't played out well...yet.

I know I am a bit biased, but I don't blame Henderson for wanting the Tech job. Along with ULL, Tech is at the top of the ULS system and can be a great gig. And, unfortunately, Guice has not lived up to expectations, so Tech has fallen behind and anyone with ambition and a little ability can move Tech forward very quickly. So, if Henderson wants to do a good job in a place with tons of potential, Tech is a great opportunity.

Dr. Guice's attributes were an enhanced building program. All over the campus.

The Engineering and Business colleges have jumped into the future. Better and more needed parking lots have been produced. Residential dorms are enhanced tremendously.

As an architect and engineer, Dr. Guice has architected and engineered nicely. As an administrator he was more of one to delegate in athletics, endowment development and corporate PR. Yes, he could have been more aggressive in those areas to appease more people. I liked his reaching out to all students on a personal basis.

I've always been a personal friend (classmate) of Les Guice, of whom I'm very proud. I wish him well and congratulations on his career.

Since I'm no longer the SACOTU, I still wish the new president the best of success in this opportunity to shine in this new era.
