"hard commit" is a term 24/7 uses. Your guess is as good as mine. Once upon a time if you committed to go to a school, you were taken at your word, but as time rolled on a "verbal commitment" really did not mean anything until you sign the letter of intent. That was the suspense each season. Now with transfer portals and NIL, the intigue has another layer. There are no freshman on our basketball. So the days of developing underclassmen and red shirts are Gone with the Wind. Intriguing questions to say the least.
I see Oak Grove QB Jackson Bradley whose team won State Title is a 24/7 Hard Commit to Tech. He is also a Junior.
Seems to me, the only reason to make your commitment public is so another school notices your commitment so they can get a decommitment and recommitment
Exactly. If I never watch another college football game in my life, I'll be just fine. I honestly wish we would either drop down to FCS or eliminate it all together. At one time the cards were stacked against us, but now we don't even have a seat at the table anymore. The transfer portal and NIL have completely destroyed college football for the G5, and you have to wonder how long some of the lower level P5's have before they are left out in the cold.
Did Cumbie get a 3 or 5 year contract when he arrived? If it was a 3 year deal, he may find it hard to attract any quality coaches to come spend a year at Tech knowing that if they don't turn this thing around they're probably all gone. He's between a rock and a hard place in more ways than one seems to me.
5.
No coach is dumb enough to sign a 3 year deal.

$3 Million for 3 years ain’t bad at all for roughly 9 months of work. Some coaches quit as soon as they sign the paperwork. I figure Cumbie knew earlier on it was a waste of time at Tech so he’s happy to pocket his checks for as long as they last. He’ll be a small college assistant soon enough and only be responsible for a small part of the team which suits him much better. A head coaching job is way over his head and far beyond his management skills.
Putting the issue of Coach Cumbie aside for moment, I feel every member of this board would agree, the issue at hand is the Brave New World of Transfer Portals and NIL. Whoever is Coach at Tech winning as Holtz was doing or losing as Cumbie, we would still see the exit of players at the end of each season who are seeking more lucative environments and to showcase their talent at a higher level. As has been mentioned, we are a adjunct "junior college". The days of Student Athletes with kids coming in as freshmen and either red shirting or starting right away, are a thing of the recent past. Do we settle for that or has already been suggested, drop down to FCS level. During the Techsters game Saturday, Lyn Rollins was saying SMU raised 100 million dollars in a week, for their move to the ACC. I personally do not like this Brave New World. It is what it is.
