    Student Athletic Fee

Wanted to find the last discussion of student athletic fees, but I apparently don't know how to use the search function.

I see our little brothers down the road just passed a student athletic fee that is said will generate $600,000 in year one. Good for them.

When did our student body vote a similar fee down? When can they take another vote?

Looks like nlu's fee that passed was $150 for the year. Techs proposed and failed fee was for $450 per year. Tech did a horrible job at trying to sell this to the students.

This vote was taken when the woke crap was at it's peak. We had a record turnout of student vote. Why? Because the students were encouraged by Tech's faculty to get out and vote against it. This is what happens when bureaucracy gets involved in business and budget needs. I can assure you that all the faculty railing against the increase are highly offended with what DOGE is doing now.

FWIW, the same AD who decided to make "Techsters" exclusive to WBB is the one who failed to push against his fellow employees who worked to vote it down. The AD prior to him never had a student fee on his agenda.

I am curious on other people's thoughts on enrollment. We have had this mandate for a long time about increasing enrollment.. More students could mean more money, but over a 4 year cycle it never seems we increase enrollment. We get the email biggest freshman class etc. etc. then when you look at our numbers they are pretty static.

How much do we benefit from the selective admissions versus open enrollment like the ULL sisters? Do we want to grow, or do we want to be considered a smaller higher academic institution?

    It's all smoke and mirrors

The QUICKEST way to get a fee passed is in person voting with a set, clear agenda of where the money is going and what it will be used for -

It can't contain any PAY FOR PLAY language or even hint that it will be used as such or it will be DOA

If we are going to be selective we should be selective.

    Regents’ Core CurriculumGPA/Testing Requirements - 2.0 Core with 23 ACT/1130 SAT or 2.5 Core with 15 ACT/830 SAT
No Remedial Courses Needed - 18 ACT English/500 SAT ERW and 19 ACT Math/510 SAT MATH
These should be bumped up more than a few points and no concessions made like certain other universities do. And then of course we have to maintain a high standard of education on our end.

Student enrollment has been virtually stagnant for over 40 years. The population hasn't really increased since I was a freshman in 1982.

I do agree if we are going to be selective then those numbers need to rise. Those are extremely low for actual high academic achieving students.

I get that but a fee for 10,000 kids still raises less than the same fee for 15,000 kids. Our goal either needs to be elite academic and Jech athletics or realize we want to play in a bigger sandbox athletically and open the gates. Because riding the fence in grand Tech fashion has played a big role in getting us where we are right now. I know the landscape of college sports is wildly different now and there are tons of factors. I think most of us left hanging around the program realize our self-inflicted wounds over the years have contributed as much or more than outside forces.

Down the road is in BIG trouble. I don't think our numbers are this bad but we are closer to being in their boat than in anyone elses. And yes, largely our own fault.

Meanwhile word is swirling of the creation of a North Louisiana Law School, hosted by NSU. Current president and former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice James Genovese will serve as interim dean of the law school, I suppose while also serving as university president. I doubt LSU, supported by Southern, Tulane, and Loyola will want this to happen. They want the only law schools in the state.

Good for them. Shame we couldn't ever get our act together for something similar.

Thats a tough road to accreditation for a law school. I wish them the best of luck but even if the other public law schools don't try and kill it, it could die on the vine within a couple of graduating classes.

Some years ago Louisiana College explored establishing a law school for North Louisiana. I think they envisioned it being located in Shreveport. But they could never raise enough money to even serve as seed money. LC (now Louisiana Baptist) is a small private school, so the hill was steeper for them to climb. NSU doesn't have a large endowment either, so the state will have to be a big benefactor in it.
