Re: RIP Dave Nitz
So sad to hear this. Now I am really glad I have a few of his radio broadcasts recorded. I can enjoy his work anytime I wish to.

Spoke at length with Nitz when he was inducted into the Louisiana H of F. (also spoke with Matt Dunigan then).

Re: RIP Dave Nitz
Damn…..he was the best ever football PBP guy….we were damn lucky to have in Ruston.
There will be no one better that can call football, baseball and basketball.
Baseball was probably his strongest - he was smooth with the call.
Dave excelled despite having less than average talent next to him at the color commentary position…..he carried those guys and brought them up a level.

Re: RIP Dave Nitz
I remember riding an elevator with him at Fair Grounds Field as a teenager. I was so in awe that you would have thought I was standing next to Mick Jagger.

Re: RIP Dave Nitz
Nitz loved baseball, his favorite sport to call, and he was damn good at it (the best). But his basketball play-by-play listening on the radio was ridiculously good. His is the absolute best hoops' call ever. Period. If you had seen the Tech teams play, in person, you know what they looked like, for instance you could close your eyes and envision Karl Malone...and Nitz was so good, listening on the radio you could "see" Malone (and all other players) doing what Nitz just called. He painted a picture in motion, nonstop. No stupid interruptions talking about other things that had nothing to do with what was happening that moment on the court.
Yes, calling sports on radio is different than on TV. The radio guy has a responsibility to keep the audience up with the action, no dead-air time. Not everyone, even otherwise good sports broadcasters, can handle radio play-by-play. When I travel I listen to sports on the radio. Drives my wife nuts who wants to listen to music (and I do allow that to appease her...). I listen to various broadcasts on the radio, not even close to the talent of Nitz.
Freeway Dave! the ole Nitzer!
The GOAT.

Re: RIP Dave Nitz
Spent the first 47 years of my life listening to him call Tech sports in the fall and spring and then Captains baseball in the summers until they moved to Frisco. RIP to a true legend.
